SAU Volleyball receives AVCA Team Academic Award
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team has been honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 season, the AVCA announced Monday, July 25. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. The AVCA recorded its highest-ever total number of recipients, honoring 762 programs teams nationwide this year. Spring Arbor boasted a 3.60 team GPA – the 10th-best mark among NAIA programs. The Cougars had nine players maintain at least a 3.5 GPA, while three of those were recognized as NAIA Scholar-Athletes (junior or above with at least a 3.5 GPA). Spring Arbor opens its 2016 season Aug. 26 when it travels to Dearborn, Michigan for the University of Michigan-Dearborn Early Bird Challenge.

Congressman Applauds Heroin Epidemic Act Signed into Law
Michigan's 7th District Congressman Tim Walberg, a member of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic, released the following statement in response to President Obama signing the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) into law on Friday. “This comprehensive response will make a dramatic difference for first responders, law enforcement, health care providers, and recovery organizations working on the front lines to fight against the heroin epidemic plaguing our communities. It will provide greater hope and support for those battling addiction and in need of a helping hand and a second chance. I’m encouraged to see this urgently needed legislation signed into law as we continue to find bipartisan solutions to reverse the devastating trends of addiction,” said Congressman Walberg. CARA passed the House by a 407-5 vote, the Senate by 92-2 vote, and is supported by more than 200 leading advocacy groups, including many in Michigan’s 7th District. “Lives will be saved with the support from CARA.
