Young guns powering Michigan Center girls basketball team

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Michigan Center — When the sun set on the 2015-16 basketball season, Michigan Center girls coach Joe Lusk had one senior one his roster.   Youth was at the forefront.   A year later, with Molly Nutt as the lone senior on the current roster, well, youth is at the forefront.   Right next to winning.   “Very good chemistry this year,” Lusk said last week about his team. “That’s been a huge factor. We like to play up tempo, and at the same time, we’re leaning how to control the ball and play with the lead.”   With a only a handful of wins to speak of last winter, the Cardinals hit the ground running this time around.   No baby steps, just an open mind and free spirit as to what the season could hold.   Lusk said there were no specific expectations.   “We knew we’d be competitive, but that’s about it,” he added.   When the team hit the holiday break, it did so with a 6-1 overall record.   The lone loss was a 67-57 setback to Grass Lake in overtime.   “They really caught my eye in the…

Spring Arbor Men’s Basketball freshman Paul Marandet claims CL Player of the Week honors

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University freshman guard Paul Marandet (Warsaw, IN / Warsaw HS) has earned the Crossroads League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award.   Marandet scored a career-high 25 points to lead Spring Arbor to a 62-53 road win over Purdue University Northwest on Friday. The Warsaw, Indiana native made a season-best seven field goals shooting 7-for-10 from the floor. He also made a season-high 10 free throws converting 10-of-12 attempts from the charity stripe. In addition to his scoring, Marandet added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.   On the season, Marandet is averaging 11.9 points per game, which is the second-most by any freshman in the league. He is also averaging 4.4 assists per game – the sixth best mark overall in the league.   Spring Arbor (10-6, 2-2 CL), which has won five of its last six contests, will open the new calendar year with a home game against Crossroads League foe Goshen College (9-7, 2-2 CL) on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
