Next City Council Meeting Moves to Michigan Theatre for Second Time

Following a record number of attendees at the Jackson City Council meeting last month, city officials have moved the next scheduled council meeting to a new venue. Jackson City Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the Michigan Theatre in downtown Jackson, 124 N. Mechanic St. Officials opted to change venues after the Jan. 24 meeting had to be moved from City Hall at the last minute when nearly 500 people showed up to speak on the Non-Discrimination Ordinance (NDO). Doors open at 6 p.m. to welcome what many expect  another large crowd.  The NDO prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, public housing and public accommodations. “We’re expecting an even larger crowd than last time,” Public Information Officer Will Forgrave said, “and we need to plan accordingly. We were caught off guard at our last meeting and we don’t want that to happen again.” At last week's meeting, City Council was presented with the first reading of the Non-Discrimination Ordinance.  Passing on a vote of 4-3, the ordinance advances to a second reading next week.  If approved, the ordinance will go into effect in 30 days. The January 24th council meeting likely set…

Jackson’s “Handle With Care” to Alert Schools of Students Suffering Traumatic Events

Children and youth in Jackson County will be “handled with care” in their schools following a distressing event that requires intervention from local law enforcement officers and personnel. Collaborating to bring a program called Handle With Care to Jackson County are the entire law enforcement community, every school district in the county, Center for Family Health, Family Service and Children’s Aid, LifeWays Community Mental Health and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Jackson County office. Handle With Care was first developed in West Virginia, and provides the school with a “heads up” when a child has been identified at the scene of a traumatic event such as a house fire, a domestic violence situation, a shooting, an arrest of a family member, a drug raid or a motor vehicle accident. Police officers are prepared to look around for children when they are on scene and determine their name and where they go to school. Before school starts the next day they will make sure the school is sent a note that simply says to “Handle that particular child With Care.” The Handle With Care program was designed to help children struggling with the effects of trauma by allowing their…

File treating Wednesday’s meeting with Hanover-Horton as just another game, even if it’s not

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Napoleon — When he finds himself on the sideline Wednesday night analyzing the opponent, Jeremy File will have to feel something different than normal.   Even if he doesn’t want to admit it.   File, the first-year Napoleon boys basketball coach was an All-State recipient during his playing days at Hanover-Horton.   He guided the Comets to the quarterfinals in 2002 and the state semifinals in 2003, eventually ending his career as the leading scorer in program history with more than 1,500 to his name.   And again, File will have to feel something different than normal Wednesday, as the sideline general of the Pirates leads his guys against his former coach and former team for the first time ever.   “I’m looking forward to a great atmosphere, and I think that’s the great part,” File said of the 7 p.m. home date against Hanover. “They travel so well. They bring a good crowd. It’s going to be exciting.”   Asked about the obvious aspect of the game, about taking on his former program and going one on one against Chad Mortimer, his former coach, File did his best to downplay it.   “I…
