Northwest Grad Kaitlyn Arnold receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Alma, Mich. - Senior Kaitlyn Arnold (Jackson, Mich./Northwest), a member of the Alma College women's cross country and track and field teams, has been awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, it was announced recently by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.   Arnold, an integrative physiology and health science major with a 4.0 grade-point average, was one of 29 recipients for the 2016 women's fall sports season and will receive a one-time, non-renewable scholarship of $7,500. She plans to use the funds to pursue a Doctor of Optometry degree at the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University.   "I was really overjoyed when I received it," Arnold said. "This is the largest scholarship I've ever received and it was a very rewarding feeling.   "As a Division III student-athlete, we participate in athletics because we love it, not because we get monetary incentives to do so. I'm pleased the NCAA has a program like this to reward hard-working student-athletes from all divisions pursing higher education. This has definitely made all of the hard work and sacrifices to be a student-athlete competing at a high level worth it."   Arnold qualified for the NCAA III Championships in her final season with the…

Consumers Energy Completes Restoration of Power to 360,000

The March 7-8 wind storm cut power to more than 1.1 million Michigan residents – an all-time combined record – and was one of Consumers Energy’s most devastating storms in its 130-year history. Consumers Energy employees worked around the clock to turn power back on to over 360,000 homes affected by the historic wind event.  It was the largest weather related power problem in Michigan’s history. Wednesday’s outage affected more people than all major 2016 outages combined.  A total of 662,881 customers lost power in all of 2016, compared to 1,190,000 (combined Consumers Energy and DTE Energy) in last week’s storm alone. While Consumers Energy has completed restoration efforts, DTE Energy still has several thousand customers without power.  At a morning press conference, DTE Energy reported 7,000 customers remain without service.  DTE Energy had hoped to have all restoration completed by Monday night, but extensive damage to equipment and lines has presented a greater challenge. “From the wire guard, to the line clearing crew, to the call center representative, to the line worker laboring high off the ground, many employees involved in this restoration have positive stories to tell about interactions with many kind residents affected by the storm,” said Patti…
