Jackson College and Carlene Walz Lefere to Receive 2018 Governor’s Service Awards

Jackson College Heritage Center students pose at a 2017 event.  Photo courtesy Jackson College. Gov. Rick Snyder today announced Jackson College and Carlene Walz Lefere of Jackson are two of the 38 winners of the 2018 Governor's Service Awards. The winners are individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations that were selected for their commitment to volunteerism, service or philanthropy.  “This year’s winners have inspiring stories. They have made a tremendous impact on the lives of others through their service,” Snyder said. “I am extremely grateful for the contributions they have made for Michigan and am honored to recognize their incredible accomplishments.” The winners include The Jackson College Heritage Center as Education Service Leader.  For the past 10 years, under the leadership of Professor Diana Agy, Heritage Center volunteers have worked with museums, local historians and artists to create a greater sense of belonging among community members.  Since 2007, students have spent over 18,000 volunteer hours collecting over 100 oral stories, renovating a museum, making four documentary films and constructing two genealogy quilts, all for sharing lost stories.  They’ve also developed a new Heritage Center space, where locals and former military members have the opportunity to share their stories with the community.  Jason…

Comcast Announces 1 Gigabit Service Now Available in Jackson

Comcast has announced that its new 1 Gigabit-per-second internet service is now available to residential and business customers in Jackson, Lansing and their surrounding areas. Comcast’s new 1 Gigabit Internet service uses DOCSIS 3.1 technology that makes it possible for Xfinity and Comcast Business internet customers to receive gigabit speeds over the communications lines that most customers already have in their homes and offices. “We’re delivering gigabit speeds over a network that already passes tens of thousands of homes and businesses across Michigan,” said Tim Collins, senior vice president of Comcast’s Heartland region, which includes Michigan.  “As consumers and small businesses continue to rely even more heavily on the internet, we have the advanced technology in place to meet this growing demand.” In addition to residential consumers, this new technology will benefit small businesses that have a need for faster download speeds without costly and disruptive construction of new network facilities. “Business Internet 1 Gig” and “Business Internet 500” speed tiers will be available to business customers across the state. The new service tiers complement other multi-gigabit options already available to Comcast Business customers, including Comcast Business Ethernet, which the company launched and has been expanding nationally since 2011.
