Tom Butterfield Lyle Ambs Champion

Butterfield returns to form with Lyle Ambs victory

By Gary Kalahar, JTV Sports   A more stable life has helped Tom Butterfield re-establish a firm grip on his golf game. “Life is more settled now and that’s led to better golf, that’s a perfect way to say it,” Butterfield said Sunday after re-claiming a spot as one of Jackson’s top golfers with a victory in the Lyle Ambs Memorial at Sharp Park Golf Course. Butterfield capped off four victories over two warm, taxing days with a 2-and-1 triumph over two-time champion Mike Brockie. It was the sixth major local championship for Butterfield, but the first since 2014. That year, he won two titles and lost a playoff for a third while capturing Player of the Year honors. But he has played in just a few tournaments since then. “Just circumstances, I didn’t get a chance to play much,” Butterfield said. In addition to putting that behind him, Butterfield has settled into a new career that not only has him more comfortable but has benefitted his game. After being in business for 15 years, he decided to put his master’s degree in education to proper use. He moved into a job last fall teaching science at Northwest Alternative School.…

City of Jackson Starts Employment Program for Youth

Photo:  Youth Corps workers on a clean-up project in Downtown Jackson.  Courtesy:  City of Jackson When you’re out and about in Jackson this summer, you’re likely to see a group of young people working hard to clean up the city. Micah Cretsinger, a recent graduate of Jackson High School, is one of them. “This is actually my first job,” Cretsinger said. It’s all part of the City of Jackson Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Core Program, which hires local high school and college-age people to make sure Jackson is looking its best. “Sometimes we clean up the streets. Pick up cigarette butts, trash, and some days we do big projects like mulching and weeding parking lots. It really depends on what’s going on that day,” Cretsinger said. Parks and Recreation Director Kelli Hoover says this is the program’s first year. “It is a great first job experience program. It’s a job skill building program. We are also going to have people come in and work with you on interview skills. How to do a resume, what does it mean to be a skilled worker in the workforce,” Hoover said. Hoover says reliable summer employment is sometimes hard to come by…

Popular musicals, youth productions, dinner theatre comedy and a cabaret are in the lineup for Center Stage Jackson’s 2019-20 season announced today. The season will start in the fall with a Main Stage musical, Jekyll & Hyde. An evocative tale of two men – one, a doctor, passionate and romantic; the other, a terrifying madman – and two women – one, beautiful and trusting; the other, beautiful and trusting only herself– both women in love with the same man and both unaware of his dark secret. A devoted man of science, Dr. Henry Jekyll is driven to find a chemical breakthrough that can solve some of mankind's most challenging medical dilemmas. Rebuffed by the powers that be, he decides to make himself the subject of his own experimental treatments, accidentally unleashing his inner demons along with the man that the world would come to know as Mr. Hyde. Six performances will be held October 25-27, & November 1-3, 2019 at Jackson College's Potter Center. Immediately following will be a Youth Theater presentation of Fairy Tale One-Acts: A combination of Trio! by Lucy Williams and Bedtime Stories (As Told By Our Dad) (Who Messed Them Up) by Ed Monk.
