Northwest Undefeated in I-8 Conference Wrestling

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Like the movie “The Blues Brothers,” Northwest High School is getting the band back together in its wrestling program. Only the “band” is a group of former wrestlers who now have student-athletes on the squad and former coaches coming back to help the program. It appears to be working. The Mounties defeated Battle Creek Pennfield 72-9 at home on Wednesday to remain undefeated in Interstate-8 Conference action as the regular season comes to a close. Northwest can claim its first conference championship in 11 years during the I-8 final at Hastings High School on Feb. 8. The Mounties are 24-4 this season and ranked No. 10 in Division 2 by MichiganGrappler.com. “A lot of the former wrestlers are back coaching and they have kids in the program,” NWHS head Coach Bruce Gumbert said. “We also have good coaching at the middle school level. “There is a lot of good energy back at Northwest.” Northwest won 13 conference championship during a 23-year stretch between 1974 and 1996.…
