Governor Whitmer Directs Flags to Remain Lowered for Memorial Day
All flags are currently flying at half-staff due to the coronavirus pandemic and should remain lowered to remember fallen service members, but will return to full-staff following Memorial Day honors. (May 22, 2020 12:35 PM) Governor Gretchen Whitmer has directed U.S. and Michigan flags throughout the state of Michigan to remain lowered at half-staff on Monday, May 25, 2020 until noon to honor Memorial Day and remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty. “Memorial Day pays tribute to the brave Michiganders who selflessly heeded the call of duty despite the incredible and inherent dangers facing them,” Whitmer said. “In honor of the women and men who gave everything to their country, we resolve ourselves to work alongside each other to build a state that is worthy of their service and sacrifice.” The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and selfless service of military service members by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is…
Michigan National Guard Aids Residents Impacted by Midland Flooding While Continuing COVID-19 Response
(May 22, 2020 11:57 AM) On Wednesday, May 20, Michigan National Guard units from Bay City, Saginaw, Port Huron, and other nearby communities responded to a request from Michigan State Police (MSP) to aid evacuating residents following massive flooding in the Midland area resulting from the breach of the Edenville and Sanford Dams. Working in cooperation with state and local incident commanders and county Emergency Operations Center personnel, Michigan National Guard members were dispatched to help evacuate 21 individuals, as well as six dogs and two cats threatened by the flooding. Guard members utilized equipment such as Light Medium Tactical Vehicles (LMTVs) that are capable of driving through high water for this mission. This support continued on Thursday, where Michigan National Guard members assisted local first responders with door-to-door wellness checks for residents in locations hit hard by the flood, checking that residents were accounted for and not in need of medical attention. In addition to assisting community members, Michigan National Guard members recovered and removed books from a flooded library in Midland. This rapid response was accomplished while the Michigan National Guard remains heavily integrated into the State of Michigan’s fight against COVID-19. Nearly 1,000 guard members are also…
City of Jackson Cancels Recreation Programs and Closes Nixon Pool and Skate Park for Summer 2020 Season
UPDATED to include cancelation of all recreation programs. (UPDATED May 22, 2020 12:05 PM) The City of Jackson is announcing the cancellation of all recreation programs and closure of its Nixon Park recreation facility for the summer 2020 season. This difficult decision was made because of COVID-19 public health concerns and budgetary restrictions. The Nixon Park facility, which includes a public swimming pool and skate board park, was scheduled to open June 15. The cancellations impact all youth, adult and senior programs organized by the Parks and Recreation Department. In addition to protecting public health, these changes are also a result of recent budget restrictions. The City of Jackson is planning for a loss of tax revenue related to the COVID-19 crisis and City officials are looking for ways to prioritize City services. Kelli Hoover, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department, says this is not a permanent decision. “Recreation programs will resume and the Nixon Park facility will reopen when COVID-19 concerns are reduced and funds are available to operate them. We are still waiting on direction from State government about when it’s appropriate to re-open other recreation facilities, such as playgrounds, picnic shelters, and community centers,” Hoover…
