MHSAA Announces Boys Tennis Postseason Plans

(September 11, 2020 12:18 PM) The Executive Committee of the Michigan High School Athletic Association on Thursday approved an adjusted format for this fall’s Lower Peninsula boys tennis postseason to reduce the opportunity for spread of COVID-19 while still awarding team and No. 1 singles champions in four divisions. The Executive Committee – comprised of officers of the larger Representative Council – approved a one-season switch in postseason format that will match full teams in head-to-head competition. The format switch will limit the numbers of teams playing together at a single site. The postseason will begin with Team District one-day tournaments to be played during Oct. 7-10 at 16 sites per division. The District champions will advance to the Team Finals in Divisions 1-4 to be played over two days during Oct. 15-17. For each division’s Finals, the first rounds will be played out at four sites before semifinalists converge for the last two rounds. The following week, during a one-day tournament to be scheduled during Oct. 22-24, 32 No. 1 singles players will compete in bracketed play for the championships in four divisions (eight finalists per division).  Further details will be provided soon on the Boys Tennis page of…

Events of September 11, 12, and 13, 2020

Friday, September 11, 2020 Patriot Day.  Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and upon all public buildings and grounds across the state of Michigan to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, September 11, 2020 to remember those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia, and those who perished when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001.  “On Patriot Day, we remember the Americans who lost their lives and honor the first responders who put everything on the line as they rushed toward danger,” Whitmer said. “During those tragic moments, our nation came together as a united force to help our fellow Americans in their time of need. It showed us that we can, and will, overcome any tragedy.”  The State of Michigan honors Patriot Day by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.   Bright Walls “Bright Spots”.  Bright Walls is bringing you more “bright spots” to help get through 2020!   Three artists from the United States will be in Jackson from September 6–13…

EEE Confirmed in Jackson County Horse

(September 10, 2020 5:31 PM) The Jackson County Health Department (JCHD) has received information from the State departments of MDHHS and MDARD that a horse has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). This is the 19th EEE positive horse in Michigan to date. At the time of this publication, there are no human cases of EEE in Jackson County or the State. JCHD is taking this single confirmed positive EEE horse case very seriously by providing the public and local officials with additional information as it becomes available. Today’s press release by JCHD follows yesterday’s MDHHS press release concerning the other 18 positive horse cases that have occurred across Michigan, mostly in the mid-Michigan area between Grand Rapids and Clare. This Jackson County horse was located between Grass Lake and Michigan Center, the general geographic area where the county’s 2019 EEE cases also occurred. “At this time and with an abundance of caution, JCHD recommends that everyone limit their outdoor events and activities that occur during dusk to dawn and take other precautions, such as the use of repellant sprays and long sleeve shirts and pants. The dusk to dawn hours are the prime hours when the mosquitos responsible…

New MDHHS Order Will Allow Outdoor Visits at Nursing Homes, Residential Facilities

(September 10, 2020 5:24 PM) People living in residential care facilities such as nursing homes soon will be able to see visitors outdoors under a new epidemic order signed today by Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Director Robert Gordon that also requires precautions to protect against COVID-19. The directive permits additional exceptions to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s order that temporarily restricts visits during the pandemic for the health and safety of residents, visitors and staff at health care, residential care, congregate care and juvenile justice facilities. Based in part on recommendations from Gov. Whitmer’s Nursing Home Preparedness Task Force, the new order is effective next Tuesday, Sept. 15. “Limiting visitation has saved lives,” Gordon said. “And seeing loved ones in person is important for mental health. Allowing outdoor visits – with proper procedures such as requiring social distancing and masks – is good for residents and can keep everyone safe.” In addition to the task force recommendations, other factors in the decision to expand visitation include a flattening of the COVID-19 curve and feedback from families and advocates about how the burden of the current restrictions has grown over time. On June 30, when MDHHS last expanded visitation,…
