Events of October 30, 31, and November 1, 2020

Friday, October 30, 2020 Halloween Drive-Through at the Jackson YMCA.  The Y is offering a free drive-through event for families to pick up Halloween treats and mittens/hats for the winter.  This event is held in conjunction with the student meal distribution in partnership with JPS.  The Y team will be wearing their best costumes to make this a fun, festive day for all.  If children are in school, parents may pick up items for them.  11 AM to 1 PM.  Jackson YMCA, 127 West Wesley Street, Downtown Jackson. Grand Rivers Farmers Market.  The Jackson Downtown Development Authority presents the Grand River Farmers Market.  Local produce, crafts, flowers, plants, baked goods and more.  9 AM to 2 PM Friday and Saturday.  Corner of Glick and Mechanic, along the Grand River.  Please practice social distancing and wear a mask.  Every Friday and Saturday through October. Popcorn Drive-Thru Pickup.  Michigan Theatre.  Pull up on Mechanic Street (under the Michigan Theatre Marquee) between 5:00 and 6:30 P.M.  For your free box (or boxes) of famous Michigan Theatre popcorn.  Just pull up and one of our masked and gloved representatives will hand you the popcorn. Michigan Reports 3,675* Coronavirus Cases Today, State Total Now 171,220

(October 29, 2020 4:24 PM) Michigan reported 3,675* coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 171,220.  The State of Michigan is reporting 41** COVID-19-related deaths today, with the state total at 7,298. *Note on daily counts (10/29/20): Statewide network connectivity issues delayed today's data pull past the 10AM cutoff. This resulted in some cases that would have normally been counted in tomorrow's totals being included today. **The deaths announced today includes 22 deaths identified during a Vital Records review. See cumulative data page for more information. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 10/23/2020): 114,939.  This information is updated Monday through Saturday at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.  Monday reports include Sunday data.

MDHHS Extends Emergency Orders; Tightens Rules for Indoor Gatherings

(October 29, 2020 3:46 PM) The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) today revised and extended its epidemic order to contain the spread of COVID-19, as Michigan continues to see a surge in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Although most of the order is unchanged, new provisions target indoor gatherings where COVID has spread most rapidly. Michigan presently has 172 cases per million people and positivity of tests has increased from about 2% to 5.5% and both indicators have been increasing for over four weeks. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 have doubled over the last three weeks while the state death rate has increased for five consecutive weeks. “The only way to beat COVID is to act on what we’ve learned since March,” said MDHHS Director Robert Gordon. “Wear masks. Keep six feet of distance. Wash hands. And avoid the indoor get-togethers where we have seen COVID explode.” As part of the newly extended orders, MDHHS today reduces from 500 persons to 50 persons the maximum gathering size for indoor gatherings such as weddings, parties, and banquets which occur in nonresidential settings without fixed seating. UIA Update: Claim Dashboard Launched to Increase Transparency

(October 29, 2020 3:35 PM) The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has launched a new dashboard to increase transparency and provide insight into the historic measure of unemployment insurance activity since beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The online resource, available at Michigan.gov/UIA, hosts weekly data including the total amount of unemployment benefits paid for federal and state unemployment programs, types of claims, number of claimants, percent of eligible claimants paid and weekly claim activity.  The dashboard will be updated each Wednesday and includes a download feature for a full report containing more detailed information. Telephone Appointment System The UIA continues to encourage claimants to utilize the new phone appointment system. Launched last week, the tool helps customers resolve specific claim issues and has already served nearly 5,000 workers. The Agency reminds claimants to please answer their phones at the designated appointment time. The UIA will contact claimants from the following number: 866-500-0017.
