Michigan Approved for Second Round of Pandemic-EBT Benefits

(February 5, 2021 8:18 PM) Approximately 810,000 Michigan children whose access to nutritious school meals has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will receive $741.6 million in assistance benefits that their families can use to pay for food at stores or online. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are announcing that the state has gained federal approval for a second round of Pandemic-EBT benefits. “The last thing that families should have to worry about during a pandemic is feeding their children,” Gov. Whitmer said. “I am happy that Michigan families will be able to count on this additional support to help them access nutritious meals during the ongoing pandemic. That’s why it’s so important that the legislature passes the COVID recovery plan I put forward that provides an additional $2.1 billion in food assistance as well as the much-needed support for vaccine distribution, small businesses, and getting our kids back in the classroom safely." Students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 are eligible if they qualify for free or reduced-price lunches at school and in-person learning is not available at their school or is not available on a full-time basis. Pandemic-EBT will provide another…

Senator Stabenow Announces $3.88M Award to LifeWays for Crisis Services

(February 5, 2021 4:56 PM) U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow today announced that LifeWays community behavioral health organization in Jackson has been selected as Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. The clinic will receive a total of $3,886,311 in new funding to meet the growing need for mental health and addiction services. This clinic joins 18 other certified clinics already providing critical behavioral health services across Michigan. This new clinic is a result of the passage of the Excellence in Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Act authored by Senator Stabenow and Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO). This law established new Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, which are transforming the way behavioral health and addiction treatment services are delivered in Michigan and across the country. This clinic is required to provide a comprehensive set of behavioral health services including 24/7/365 crisis services; outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment services; immediate screenings, risk assessments, and diagnoses; and care coordination with emergency rooms, law enforcement, and veteran groups. LifeWays is nearing completion of the construction project for 24/7 Crisis Services at LifeWays Community Mental Health. This new service will provide 24/7 in-person care as an alternative to the emergency room for persons having a mental health crisis.  The…

City Council Considering Use of COVID-19 Funds To Address Foreclosures

(February 5, 2021 4:22 PM) With foreclosure on the horizon for some residents due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Jackson is proposing uses more funds to keep people in their homes. A hearing will be held at the Tuesday, Feb. 9 virtual Jackson City Council meeting for the council to hear public comment on the proposal, which plans to allocate an additional $120,000 to foreclosure prevention. Additional money for this program would use CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) funds from the federal government. In May 2020, the City Council allocated $60,000 in CARES funds to the foreclosure prevention program, with $20,000 going to the Community Action Agency (CAA) to administer the program. City officials are now proposing an additional $100,000 to the program and an added $20,000 to CAA. Economic strains brought on by the pandemic are putting residents in dire financial situations, which often means not being able to afford mortgage and property tax payments. These additional fund allocations are being proposed to keep up with the growing demand for foreclosure help in the City and keep families in their homes. Residents needing this assistance apply through CAA, and must met certain requirements, such…
