Denig Wins Rain-Soaked Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament

Jackson area golfer Scott Denig follows through on a drive during the championship match of the Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament at Ella Sharp Park Golf Course on Sunday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (June 27, 2021 8:18 PM) There was no time like the present according to both finalists playing in the Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament at Ella Sharp Park Golf Course on Sunday. Qualifying was rained out on June 19 but completed on Saturday - meaning the championship flight could be completed on time if three 18-hole matches were played on Sunday.  Scott Denig and Colin O’Connell decided to give it a go about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday after winning a pair of championship matches earlier in the day. An empty course allowed for the players to play at a quicker pace. Denig trailed 1-down after nine holes but won holes 10 and 11 with pars to go one ahead.  The championship match was all square when O’Connell parred No. 12. Denig took the lead for good with a birdie on No 15.  The major is a second for Denig after he won the Jackson City Championship in 2017 – a…

Walz Earns Medalist Honors at Lyle Ambs

Pete Walz earned the medalist honors with a 3-under-par 67 at the Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament at Ella Sharp Park Golf Course on Saturday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (June 26, 2021 8:22 PM) Fifty years to the day Pete Walz defeated Bill Chittum 3-and-1 to earn the first of three Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament titles.  On Saturday, he earned the medalist honors with a 3-under-par 67 at Ella Sharp Golf Course. It is the first time the six-plus decade Jackson County competitive golfer shot his age. He won the Lyle Ambs in 1971, 1975, and 1980.  “I think the (golf) hole forgot that I was old,” Walz said. “I putted pretty well today for me.” The golfers were met with a really wet golf course following heavy rain on Friday. Qualifiers were able to pick, clean, and place all over Sharp Park on Saturday. “Having ball in hand (anywhere) made it easier,” Walz said.  Walz was the No. 2 seed behind defending champion Justin Bunch. Greg Zeller is the No. 3 seed qualifying with a 1-under-par 69; Bret Valkuchak and Colin O’Connell shots 70s; David Mickle, Scott Denig, Cody Lysher, Brett…

Weather Doesn’t Spoil Concord Classic Opening Night

The Cornhole Tournament is one of the more popular events at the Concord Classic Weekend. Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV News. By Jeff Steers JTV News (June 25, 2021 10:57 PM) Concord Classic Weekend organizer Matt Lehman was not feeling too confident about hosting the event about 10 a.m. on Friday.  There was a 100 percent chance of rain and high winds in the area. But later in the afternoon the weather cleared, the rain stopped, and the Friday night activities were a go. “We just rolled the dice and went with it,” Lehman said. “We saw a break in the weather later in the afternoon.” The Concord Classic Weekend has been moved to Gottschalk Park for space purposes. There are more than two dozen vendors at the event this weekend. Lehman said having a chance to have everything in one place was key for the switch from downtown to Gottschalk Park – a quarter mile west of downtown Concord. The event raises money for Concord High School. “We expect to raise about $10,000 for the school, but we put a lot of money back into the festival,” Lehman said. The event also marks the 150th anniversary of Concord becoming…
