Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients Announced in Class C & D

(February 8, 2022 10:50 AM) The Michigan High School Athletic Association has selected 10 student-athletes from Class C and D member schools to receive scholarships through the MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award program.  Farm Bureau Insurance, in its 33rd year of sponsoring the award, will give $2,000 college scholarships to 32 individuals who represent their member schools in at least one sport in which the Association sponsors a postseason tournament. The first 30 scholarships are awarded proportionately by school classification and the number of student-athletes involved in those classes; also, there are two at-large honorees who can come from any classification. Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be carrying at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the Michigan High School Athletic Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Other requirements for the applicants were to show active participation in other school and community activities and produce an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics. JAX 60 to Host PBA Event Tuesday, Wednesday

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (February 8, 2022 10:08 AM) The Professional Bowlers Association will be making a stop in Jackson the next two days. And some of the top bowlers in the world will be part of the tournament. The Storm Cup: David Small’s Best of the Best Championship will start Tuesday with qualifying to begin at 11 a.m. and conclude Wednesday with the stepladder tournament beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The winner will receive a top prize of $20,000. Entry priority will be given in the following order - The top 50 2021 PBA Tour point leaders and PBA Tour champions, regardless of status, who entered by Jan. 24.  Sixty six spots are being held for priority entrants.  After Jan. 24, any remaining spots will go to the bowlers in qualifying tournaments. Some of the top bowlers in the tournament include Jason Belmonte, Kyle Troup, Anthony Simonsen, E.J. Tackett, Andrew Anderson from Holly, Mich., and Tom Smallwood from Saginaw, Mich. Girls basketball Michigan Center 59, Manchester 37: Sophomore Samantha Wynn scored 30 points including a new school record of eight made 3-pointers for Michigan Center. Aaralyn Tripp scored nine points and sophomore Julia Reynolds added seven points for MCHS (6-5).   Napoleon 44, Addison 24: The Pirates improved to 6-9 on the season with a Cascades Conference win.   Boys basketball Camden-Frontier 57, Jackson Christian 42 Girls Bowling East Jackson 13, Leslie 7: The match wasn’t completed, but the Trojans led after two games. Savanna Curey rolled a 155 game and Desiree Poole finished with a 146 game.  Addison 17, Napoleon 13: Sydney Gallagher rolled a 369 series with a 215 game for the Pirates at Hudson Lanes. The Panthers were led by Ashtin Staudinger with a 415 series.  Boys Bowling Leslie 28, East Jackson 2: Brenden Mullins finished with a 325 series to lead the Trojans. Jordan Tripp rolled a 155 game for East Jackson.  Napoleon 30, Addison 0:  Logan Schneider rolled a 493 series and Dustin Moeckel finished with a 445 series for the Pirates.  Swimming Jackson 146, Tecumseh 30  Jackson swept all of the events in the match including the relays. Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Community Awards Week.  The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Night of Distinction recognizes and provides visibility to individuals, volunteers, and groups that have made exceptional contributions to Jackson, making it a better place to live, work and raise a family. This special evening applauds vision, leadership, commitment, and service by awarding Community Awards as well as celebrating past & incoming board members of the Jackson Chamber.  The event was postponed due to the snowstorm, but award winners will still be announced and celebrated during Community Awards Week, February 7-11.
