(May 3, 2022 8:08 PM) The Spring Arbor University Athletic Department today announced John Williams as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program.  “I want to thank the SAU Athletic Department’s search committee and President Ellis for this incredible opportunity,” said Williams. “My family and I are eager to build and maintain genuine and positive relationships with everyone in the program.”  Assistant athletic director Betsy Martinez said, “We are thrilled to be adding John to our SAU Athletics family. He brings an incredible passion and energy for the game of basketball! He is bought into our mission of developing a depth of faith, skills of leadership, and strength of character within our women's basketball program.”  Williams is no stranger to Spring Arbor. The SAU alum (’05) and former student-athlete has served as an Assistant Professor of Education from 2017-19, and as the university’s Dean of the School of Education since 2019, while also spending a year on the sidelines as the lead assistant for the women’s basketball team in 2017-18.  In his season with the Cougars, Williams was involved in all facets of the program, specifically strength training, recruiting, guard position work, and scouting. Entries are now being accepted for the tournament, which will begin with a qualifying round Saturday, June 4 to set the 32-player match play field. First-round matches will be played June 5, with matches continuing throughout the week leading to the 36-hole championship match June 11. Entry fee for the tournament is $120, or $75 for high school students.  In addition to all Jackson County residents being eligible, the tournament is open those living outside the county if they meet one of three criteria: They graduated from a Jackson County high school or college; previously played in a Jackson Masters or City Championship; or are employed in the county. There is no handicap limit. Entry forms are available at the Country Club of Jackson, Cascades, Sharp Park, and Arbor Hills pro shops, and registration can be made on-line at jacksongolf.net.
