To celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jackson College will be hosting a student panel discussion dedicated to further exploring the theme, “Drum Major for Justice, Peace and Righteousness,” also the theme of Saturday’s M.L. King Celebration. All are invited to this free discussion, taking place on Monday, Jan. 16 at 12 noon in Room 144 of Bert Walker Hall on Central Campus. Wrestling Western Invitational: Local wrestlers won a slew of medals at the annual Jim Dewland Invitational at Western High School. Nathan Ostrosky of Columbia Central was second at 106 and Cayley Britton finished fifth in the same weight class; Christian Millican of Columbia Central finished second at 113; Jordan Cromwell of CCHS also finished second at 120 pounds; Elijah Crist of Western was fifth at 126; Tobin Okoniewski placed second at 132 and Quinn Ferris finished fifth; Owen St. Andre of Western defeated teammate Collin Doederlein for the 138 pound title, Hunter Czubachowski of Columbia Central was fifth, and Sukhman Singh of Western placed sixth; Nolan Wahtola of Western was fourth at 144 and Reid Garcia of Lumen Christi placed fifth; Titan Parker was fifth and teammate Jackson Jones was sixth at 150 for Western; Adam Carlson of Western was fourth at 157 and teammate Gabe Hines finished sixth; Alex White of Western finished fifth at 165 pounds; Ty Farmer of Columbia Central defeated Alex Trudell of Western for the 175 pound title; Aidan Duncan of Western won the 215 pound title and Garrett Slider of Lumen Christi placed third; and A.J. Haselius Holds Himself to Higher Standards on Mat, Classroom
By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (January 15, 2023 8:00 AM) Northwest High School wrestler Adam Haselius is going to test a theory proposed by Frank Sinatra in the song “New York, New York.” In the song, Sinatra sang “If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere.” Haselius signed to wrestle for Columbia University, an Ivy League school in the city of New York. “I have held myself to a higher standard on the mat and in the classroom,” Haselius said. “Once you develop that, it just becomes natural.” But Haselius has made it a point of not only “making it” – but going above and beyond in athletics and academics. He won a Division 2 state individual title last year in wrestling, is a 4.0 student in the classroom, and was an all-state linebacker this past fall after not having played football since eighth grade. The senior thought long and hard about playing football for the Mounties. “I love Coach (Stafford) Newsome and I knew this was my last opportunity to play a sport like football,” Haselius said. “Some senior friends and I were all in and wanted to make an impact.” Northwest had earned nine wins total…
