Tall and Skinny Fits the Bill for Springport Hurdler

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports  (May 14, 2023 8:00 AM ET) Springport High School junior Eli Dyer was encouraged by his father to try hurdling. The reason being he is tall and skinny. That decision to try hurdles is paying off for the multi-purpose athlete at SHS.  Dyer has the top time in the 300-meter hurdles for Selby Track Classic qualifiers. He ran 40.91 seconds to win the East Jackson Dome Classic on Friday against a good field. “My dad encouraged me to try hurdles since I am tall and skinny,” Dyer said. “I was running times in the 45s last year. “I have a really good track coach.” Dyer started the 300-meter hurdles last year and the 110-meter hurdles this season. He has a best time of 16.18 seconds in the high hurdles. “I am not that much of a sprinter,” Dyer said. “I can stride it out better in the 300 events.” Dyer is one of those student-athletes who will try anything. The junior participates in cross country and football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and golf and track and field in the spring. He is expected to finish with 20 varsity letters, breaking the school…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (May 13 2023 9:33 PM) Local golfer Greg Zeller does not always win tournaments, but he does tend to walk away with money. He did both on Saturday. Zeller won the One-Man Scramble event at Sharp Park Golf Course with a 13-under-par 58. He tied Chris Chaney but won in a scorecard playoff – the lowest score on the hardest handicap holes. Golfers had the opportunity to hit two shots and pick the best one for each stroke.  Zeller, Chaney, and John Tarpley won the only three skins for the day, good for $266 apiece.  Lance Woodland finished third with a 60, Mike Boldt finished with a 61, and Tarpley shot a 62 in the championship flight.
