Wrestling Hanover-Horton at Montague Invitational: A.J. Fielder continued his undefeated season by winning the championship at 132 points at Montague for the Comets. Fielder is now 17-0 on the season. His brother, David, finished third at 126 points at the invitational and is now 14-3 for the season. Gavin Berkeypile of Hanover-Horton finished fifth at 144 pounds.   Manchester Team Invitational: Western High School won the title with a 5-0 record. Kaden Engelter won his 100th victory as a wrestler to go 5-0 on the day for WHS. The Panthers defeated Lumen Christi (69-6), Adrian Madison (40-36), Manchester (46-27), Hudson B (63-9), and Chelsea (58-18) in the six-team tournament. College Athletic Events Men’s College Basketball Spring Arbor 99, Siena Heights 60: The Cougars put up 57 points in the first half of the home contest Saturday. Gabe Newhof scored 34 points and Dante Favor added 13 points and 12 rebounds for SAU (9-4 overall, 2-1 Crossroads League).  Women’s College Basketball Spring Arbor 93, Rio Grande 84: Alize Tripp scored a personal-best 36 points to lead Spring Arbor to the win. Boys Basketball Mendon 62, Vandercook Lake 48: The Jayhawks fell in the consolation final at the Quincy Tournament. Freshman Jonathan Morgan scored 21 points and was named to the all-tournament team for VCL.  Lumen Christi 67, Clinton 49: The Titans improved to 4-1 on the season with a win on consecutive nights.  Wrestling Concord at Salem Invitational: Collin Thompson finished sixth overall at 144 pounds for Concord.  Jackson at Lady Mat Cats Invitational at Montague: Sienna Tovar improved to 12-1 on the season taking the title at 145 pounds for Jackson. Events of New Year’s Holiday Weekend

Monday, January 1, 2024 Cascades Cycling Club First Dozen Ride.  2 PM.  Join us on New Year's Day at 2:00 p.m. and start the New Year off with a ride!  We are meeting at the Cascades parking lot, across Denton Rd. from the Manor House.  Even if you think it is too cold for you to ride, come out and get in the photo with your Cascades Cycling Club friends! The Rose Bowl on the Big Screen at Michigan Theatre.  The Rose Bowl will be on the BIG SCREEN at Michigan Theatre on January 1, 2024.   Doors open at 4:30 pm.  Kick-off at 5:00 pm.  $2 all-beef hotdog combos will be available.  Includes a quarter pound all beef hot dog with Todoroff's coney sauce available, fresh cut onions, mustard and catsup available, a bag of chips, a fresh cookie. All perishables will be sold at reduced prices. $250,000 in Grants Awarded to Southside Businesses

(December 29, 2023 11:22 AM ET) Last night at its monthly meeting, The Martin Luther King Corridor Improvement Authority presented grants of $50,000 each to five businesses located in the Corridor.  The grants were made from the Entrepreneurial and Real Estate Fund, launched this fall to provide financial assistance to small business owners in Jackson.  Businesses receiving the first grants are:  Pryor’s BBQ House - $50,000 Owner - Larry Pryor M Power Fitness - $50,000 Owner - Mario Selby Mikey's Barbershop - $50,000 Owner - Michael Parker Hampton's Place - $50,000 Owner - Basil Hampton Jack's Take-Out - $50,000 Owner - Rafael Golden  Business owners could apply for up to $50,000 to purchase inventory, rent space, update a building, pay staff, or fund other business necessities. The Authority received more than forty applications during this first round of funding according to Authority Chairman Anthony Parker.  Parker said there will be more rounds of grants in the future and encouraged applicants not chosen in this round to reapply. In October, the MLK CIA recruited community members and business leaders to become part of the Entrepreneurial and Real Estate Fund Subcommittee tasked with designing and implementing a fund to support Southside business…
