Explore filmmaking and movies from classic to contemporary when Jackson College’s 44th Annual Winter Film Series kicks off Jan. 13.
The Winter Film Series is held annually at the Michigan Theatre in downtown Jackson as part of the College’s English 210 Introduction to Film class. Community members are welcome. Films begin at 7:15 p.m. on Mondays (doors open 6:30 p.m., auditorium opens at 7 p.m.).

Films for this year’s Series were selected by Jackson College English Professor Dave DeBaker and Michigan Theatre Operations Manager Anthony Riske. Movies are chosen based upon a weekly theme and availability.
This year’s Film Series selections are:
Jan. 13 – “The Kid,” 1921, Charlie Chaplin’s first full-length feature, the Tramp cares for an abandoned child, but events put that relationship in jeopardy.
Jan. 20 – “East of Eden,” 1955, based on the novel by John Steinbeck, a willful young man contends against his brother for the attention of their religious father while reconnecting with his estranged mother and falling for his brother’s girlfriend; stars James Dean.
Jan. 27 – “The Farewell,” 2019, a Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding to gather the family together before she dies.
Feb. 3 – “Casablanca,” 1942, cynical American expatriate struggles to decide whether or not he should help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape French Morocco. Stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
Feb. 10 – “The Big Lebowski,” 1998, Jeff ‘The Dude’ Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it; written and directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen.
Feb. 17 – “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” 1961, a young New York socialite becomes interested in a young man who has moved into her apartment building, but her past threatens to get in the way. Based on the novel by Truman Capote, stars Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.
Feb. 24 – “Dial M. for Murder,” 1954, a tennis player frames his neglected wife for murder after she inadvertently foils his plan to have her murdered. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock; Grace Kelly stars.
March 2 – “Lady Bird,” 2017, in 2002, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig.
March 9 is Jackson College’s spring break.
March 16, 23, 30, & April 6 films are still to be determined.
