(April 22, 2021 11:40 AM) Jackson voters will go to the polls this year to decide the next Mayor and who will sit on the City Council.
The City Clerk’s Office has verified paperwork submitted by candidates for the 2021 City elections. The following candidates will appear on ballots:
Mayor
Jeromy Alexander
Daniel Mahoney
Laura Dwyer Schlecte
John Wilson
Ward 1
Dena Morgan
Arlene Robinson
Ward 3
Caleb Blondke
Angelita Velasco Gunn
Ward 5
Karen Bunnell
There will be no primary election for the races in Wards 1, 3 and 5 because only two or less candidates filed. These City Council seats will be decided in the Tuesday, Nov. 2 election. Arlene Robinson (Ward 1) and Karen Bunnell (Ward 5) are incumbents. Incumbent Ward 3 Councilmember Jeromy Alexander is running for mayor.
A Citywide primary for Mayor will be held on Tuesday, Aug 3. The deadline to register as a write-in candidate for the August primary is Friday, July 23 at 4 p.m. The top two candidates with the most votes will advance to the Nov. election. Incumbent Mayor Derek Dobies announced earlier this month he would not seek reelection to a third term.
Mayoral candidates Jeromy Alexander, Laura Dwyer Schlecte, and John Wilson have previously run for the office of mayor.
Council seats in Wards 2, 4 and 6 are not up for election until 2023.
Councilmembers serve four year terms and the Mayor serves a two year term. City of Jackson elections are held on odd-numbered years and are non-partisan.
