Eight Girls Qualify for State Individual Wrestling Finals

Eight Jackson County female wrestlers qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association wrestling finals on Sunday during regional tournaments.
The wrestlers finished in the top four of their weight classes to advance. This year the MHSAA sponsored four regional tournaments – instead of only two – with the top four making the finals.
The MHSAA individual finals are scheduled for March 3, 4 at Ford Field in Detroit.
Here is a listing of the state qualifiers, their school, grade, overall record, and placement at the regional tournament.
Fie Henriksen, East Jackson, sophomore, 7-19, finished second at 170 pounds at the Girls Regional Tournament at Birmingham Groves High School Sunday.
Bella Huston, Columbia Central, sophomore, 16-6, also finished runner-up at 190 pounds at the regional tournament.
Haylee Ryan, Northwest, freshman, 8-5, finished third at 235 pounds at the regional competition.
Saige Patterson, Springport, senior, 18-22, finished third at 110 pounds at the regional tournament with a win in the consolation final.
Kayla Winget, East Jackson, junior, 21-27, placed third at 125 pounds to qualify for the state tournament.
Danni Swihart, Hanover-Horton, senior, 24-6, won the regional championship at 140 pounds with a second-period pin in the regional championship match.
Sienna Tovar, Jackson, junior, 21-8, finished third at 140 pounds and won the consolation final with a major decision.
Girls Blue Regional at Hartland
Emily Guthrie, Grass Lake, senior, 10-2, finished second at 120 pounds to advance to the state finals.

Gymnastics
Vassar Invitational: Jackson Area Gymnastics finished second at the Vassar Invitational with 135.65 points. Melody Placeway was the star for JAG winning the all-around (35.875) and the floor exercise (9.375). Ally Thrun was fourth on the floor exercise (9.1) and the vault (8.7). JAG will host Western on Thursday for a meet beginning at 6 p.m. at Hunt Elementary School. The meet will feature Jackson County gymnastics alumni at the meet.
