(November 26, 2023 6:00 AM ET) A year ago, Kadale Williams of Lumen Christi Catholic High School played safety for the Titans.

As a sophomore, he had a pretty good season with a handful of interceptions and a number of good return of kicks.

But the then-sophomore was just waiting his turn to become the starting running back.

Opponents are wishing the now junior would have waited another year … or two.

Williams has put up nearly 2,000 yards this season for the Titans and has helped Lumen Christi get to its 16th state final championship game.

Lumen Christi faces Menominee today (Sunday) in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 state title game at Ford Field in Detroit beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Williams said it was a matter of waiting his turn.

“Last year we had some seniors in front of me, so I had to wait my turn,” Williams said after the semifinal win over Millington in the D-7 semifinals. “I just focused on defense last year.”

Williams said the wait was tough, but worth it.

And the numbers show that.

Williams has rushed for 1,507 yards this season averaging 8 yards per carry. He has 27 rushing touchdowns and two receiving.

When you add up his rushing, receiving, and return yards, the junior has nearly 2,000 yards.

Williams transferred from Jackson as a freshman and made the varsity squad at Lumen Christi last year. He was a starting safety for the Titans and returned kicks.

This year he started the season with a barrage of touchdowns in the Titans’ first few games.

“I just want to dominate and play hard,” Williams said of his efforts. “I started on defense at the beginning of the season but stopped after an injury.”

Williams enjoys the atmosphere at LCCHS and the commitment from its players. The Titans are famous for summer workouts.

“Football is an everyday thing,” Williams said. “The summer workouts and the weightroom gets crazy.”

The junior has the state football finals and another year left at Lumen Christi. His focus is on Menominee and the D-7 final on Sunday.

“We need a great week of practice to get ready,” Williams said.
