Wrestling

Napoleon Invitational: Napoleon High School finished third (152.5) and Columbia Central seventh (106) at the Napoleon Invitational Saturday. Local wrestlers earned a bevy of medals in the 14 weight classes. Izayah Scott of Napoleon was sixth at 106 pounds; Christian Millican of Columbia Central won the title at 113 pounds; Logan Hartman of Napoleon and Brandon Rohde of Grass Lake finished third and fourth respectively at 120 pounds; Nathan Ostrosky of CCHS finished third at 126 pounds; Aiden Bocanegra of Napoleon and Elijah Losey of Columbia Central placed fourth and sixth respectively at 132 pounds; Brayden Maher of Napoleon placed fourth at 138 pounds; Hunter Czubachowski of CCHS placed fourth at 144 pounds; Jack Edwards of Northwest was fifth at 150 pounds; Napoleon’s Carson Warner finished third at 157; Napoleon teammates Mason Roth and Rylan Lovett finished second and fourth respectively at 165 pounds; Zack Bamm of Napoleon finished fifth at 175 pounds; Jack Reid of Grass Lake was second, Brady Warner finished third, and Shane Taylor of Columbia Central was sixth at 190 pounds; Carson Lovett of Napoleon placed fourth at 215 pounds; and Dylan Boone of CCHS and Dallas Smith of Napoleon finished second and fifth respectively at 285 pounds. 

Hudson Invitational: Thomas Fall of Northwest was sixth at 113 pounds; teammate Kayden Beach was sixth at 120 pounds; Jeff Miller of NWHS was third at 138 pounds; Andrew Beadenkopf of Michigan Center was fifth at 165 pounds; and Aidyn Williams of Northwest was sixth at 215 pounds. 

Southgate Invitational (Girls): Selena Garcia of Hanover-Horton was third at 170 pounds and teammate Rory Birch finished fourth at 100 pounds. 

Jackson at Kalamazoo Central: Jackson High School finished ninth as a team with 84.5 points at the Ron Russo Invitational. Caden Bayer won the title for the Vikings at 138 pounds and earned his 100th win during the tournament; Sienna Tovar won the girls’ title at 145 pounds; Andrew Anderson finished second at 150 pound; Aiyana Walker finished third in the girls’ meet at 170 pounds; and Reece Deshazor was second at 215 pounds. 

Western at Holt Invitational: Western High School finished fourth as a team at Holt. The Panthers lost 48-21 to John Glenn in the third-place match. Western defeated Holt, Portage Central, and St. Johns to advance to the semifinals. Alex Trudell went 5-0 on the day earning his 100th career victory for Western.

Hanover-Horton at Quincy Invitational: A.J. Fielder of Hanover-Horton won the title at 132 pounds, David Fielder was second at 126, and Gavin Berkeypile placed third at 144 pounds.

Competitive Cheer

Portage Invitational: Michigan Center won the Division 3/4 competition Friday with 718. 

Hockey

Jackson United 5, Temperance Bedford 4: Jackson United fell behind 3-1 but rebounded for the road win. Aiden Chappell scored two goals and Cameron Ronquillo, Peyton Paquin, and Riley Rogers each scored one goal for JU. Jackson (5-11) scored three times in the third period. Jonah Hughes earned the win in goal for JU.

Lumen Christi 3, Holland West 2: Isaiah Dinverno scored a goal and added two assists for the Titans. Luke Sexton and Daniel Brady also scored goals for LCCHS. Zack Jaakkola made 31 saves for Lumen Christi in the win. 

Swimming

Jackson at Haslett Invitational: Jackson High School won the invitational with 343 points in the 12-team competition. Blake Hetherington won the 100-yard freestyle (48.14) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:47) and Logan McKinney took first place in the 200-yard IM (2:05). 

Boys Basketball

Lumen Christi 56, Gabriel Richard 48: The Titans won its third game in four days with a victory over Gabriel Richard. Luke Tropea and Britton Hampton both scored 12 points in the win for Lumen Christi (10-1 overall, 6-0 conference).

Gymnastics

Vassar Invitational: Jackson Area Gymnastics finished one point out of first at the Vassar Invitational scoring 137.175. Meldoy Placeway finished second on the bars (8.8) and fourth on the bars (8.8) and Brooklyn Daly placed third on the beam (9.025) for JAG.

College Athletic Events

Women’s Basketball

Jackson College 69, St. Clair CCC 67 (OT): Kaylona Butler hit a running 8-foot shot with four-tenths of a second left in the game for the win. Butler finished with 15 points, Zoie Bamm tallied 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Michelle McGee came within one point of a triple-double with nine points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists for Jackson College in the victory. The Jets host  Mott Community College Friday for a 5:30 p.m. start. The game will be live on JTV.TV. 

Kaylona Butler

Spring Arbor 69, St. Francis 68: The Cougars earned a road win Saturday at St. Francis. Alana Nelson scored 20 points, Alex Long finished with 17 points, and Bailey Vissman tallied 10 points for SAU (16-3 overall, 7-2 Crossroads League). 

Men’s Basketball

St. Clair CCC 113, Jackson College 86: Five players scored in double digits for Jackson College in the home loss. Antonio King and Kamerin Carter each scored 16 points, Jo Coleman finished with 15 points, Brayden Pearson added 14 points, and Jay Wambere tallied 13 points for Jackson College (9-8 overall). The Jets will travel to Henry Ford College Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. 

St. Francis 87, Spring Arbor 62: Spring Arbor University fell on the road Saturday at St. Francis. Travis Grayson scored 14 points, Kevyn Robertson tallied 13 points, and Gabe Newhof scored 10 points for SAU (10-9 overall). 

Competitive Cheer

Cougar Classic at SAU: The Cougars won the five-team competition in their home invitational Saturday.
