Volleyball
ADRIAN, Mich. – Stephanie Thurner produced a season-high 18 kills and Halle Thom chipped in with 12 for the Albion College volleyball team in a five-set loss to Adrian College.
Albion tied the match by winning the second and fourth sets, but Adrian pulled away with a five point scoring run in the fifth set. Jordan Brisson and Sydney Martines had two kills apiece in the Bulldogs’ critical stretch.
Albion pulled within two points on three occasions, but Adrian scored three in a row to move the score to 14-9.
Thurner hit .213 with eight errors in 47 attempts. She also knocked down a pair of blocks.
Thom hit .257 with three errors in 35 attempts.
Lauren Outwater finished with eight kills and eight digs and Jessica Konieczny finished with seven kills and a pair of blocks.
Adrian had three players reach double figures in kills. Olivia Welch terminated 16 points and Brisson and Martines had 15 each.
Albion, 11-5 overall and 2-4 against league rivals, continues league play with a Wednesday match at Saint Mary’s College.
Women’s Soccer
OLIVET, Mich. – Albion College played from behind for the majority of the contest in a 3-1 setback in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s soccer contest at Olivet College.
Domenique Sarnecky scored the equalizer in the 25th minute as Albion maintained a 1-1 tie at halftime. Jenna Urso dished out the assist.
Isabelle Leon and Jeanette Fisher scored goals for Olivet in the second half.
Olivet finished the day with a 14-8 advantage in shots. Sarnecky was credited with three of Albion’s shots and Caroline Eagan had two.
Albion, 5-4 overall and 3-3 against MIAA rivals, will play its next four contests at home. The homestand begins Tuesday with a 4 o’clock match against Kalamazoo College.
Men’s Cross Country
HOLLAND, Mich. – Senior Mitch Clinton was eighth and Andrew Wittland was the second first-year runner to finish as Albion College took fourth place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s Cross Country Jamboree.
The team standings had Calvin College in first with a total of 22 followed by Hope College (57), Trine University (106) and Albion (122). The Britons had a three-point margin over fifth-place Adrian College.
Clinton reached the finish of the 8K race in 25:52, 30 seconds behind race winner Zachary Nowicki of Calvin.
Wittland completed his race in 26:29, good for 23rd place individually.
Erik Davis (26:44), Alex Dermody (26:58) and first-year runner Brett Navarre(27:27) completed Albion’s top five.
Albion’s next race is Oct. 17 when the team travels to Winneconne, Wis., for the AAE Invitational.
Women’s Cross Country
HOLLAND, Mich. – Jessica Shaw was the fifth individual to complete the 6K course in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Cross Country Jamboree as Albion College finished fourth in the women’s team standings.
Hope College (26), Calvin College (49), Trine University (108), Albion (132) and Saint Mary’s College (136) were the top five teams.
Running a 6K race for the second time this season, Shaw reached the finish in 22:19. It was a 32-second improvement over the time she put up in the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State University last week.
Leanne Wegley was the second Briton to finish, coming in 18th in 23:48. First-year runners Maddy Denison (24:27) and Kendra Cook (24:48) were next, and Morgan Button (25:03) completed the top five.
Albion’s next race is Oct. 17 when the team travels to Winneconne, Wis., for the AAE Invitational.
