Jackson Police Department to Host Meeting Concerning Recent Shootings

The Jackson Police Department will host a community meeting, open to the public, from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at the Martin Luther King Center to discuss the recent shooting incidents within the city. Following a short presentation by Matt Heins, the city’s director of police and fire services, a panel of city police officials will open up the meeting to questions from those in attendance. Officials from the Jackson County Sheriff ’s Office and Michigan State Police have also been asked to attend. Two recent incidents involving shootings within the city have sparked community concern, and JPD officials are looking to quell that concern and discuss the investigations into incidents involving firearms so far this year. Investigations continue into a drive-by shooting on Summit Avenue that sent four people to the hospital with gunshot wounds Monday, July 11, and a drive-by shooting at a gas station on Francis Street the following day. JPD officials say they believe the two incidents were related. It is expected discussion may also include the recent police deaths in Dallas and Baton Rouge and overall concerns by citizens and police nationwide.
