Wendy’s Charity Classic Aims for $2MM

The annual Wendy's Charity Classic golf tournament to benefit adoption charities hopes to reach $2,000,000 in total dollars raised with this year's event.  Stanton & Associates partners Al LeCrone and Mark Behm announced the tournament will return to the Country Club of Jackson August 11-12, 2013.  The event is part of the LPGA Legends tour.  Other guests:  Congressman Tim Walberg;  BuilderWalk with Andy Woell from General Materials;  Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Shelly Hendrick with board member Gene Trombley;  Cascades Humane Society Interim Executive Director Melissa Woodhurst and Programs Coordinator Kelly Sharrar with Paws in the Park (Saturday, June 1 at Cascades Falls);  Jackson Area Association of Realtors Executive Vice President Melissa Tee and Jacque Austin, Thinking Real Estate, with the Housing Expo Saturday from 10am to 2pm at Jackson Crossing. Nathan Martin wins NAIA Marathon; Breaks 28 year old NAIA record

MARION, IN – Spring Arbor University's Nathan Martin continues to amaze.  Martin now owns the fastest time ever in a collegiate marathon at 2:18.70, breaking Jim Cairns' (Puget Sound, WA) 1985 record of 2:21.08.22.  What is even more amazing is that it was Martin's first ever marathon. Official times won't be posted until later this afternoon, but it is certain that Martin's time sets the new College Standard by almost two minutes. So many amazing things can be said about this race, including Martin's lead at the very first aid station that was four miles into the race.  Martin was already all by himself by over a minute, which was unheard of.  Running a clockwork steady pace of about 5:18 per mile, he left everyone behind and ran the entire race out of eye sight by the rest of the field. By winning the 10,000 meter run on Thursday, Martin is just the second person in history to win both the 10,000, and the Marathon in the same year.  In 2003, John Ngure from Huntington University (IN) won both as well. Re-Districting & Term Limits

Due to  re-districting of the Michigan Senate, Jackson County will become part of the 16th district in 2014, which is currently represented by Hillsdale's Senator Bruce Caswell.  Senator Caswell made his first appearance on the Bart Hawley Show today, along with current 17th District State Senator (and Senate Majority Leader) Randy Richardville.  Caswell indicated he would be seeking re-election, while Richardville will be term-limited.  Richardville indicated he is considering several options, including a possible run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Carl Levin.  Other guests:  Dean Anderson, All Star Rental and Hot Air Jubilee Chairman;  Paul Buss and Elizabeth Koepfgen, Jackson County Rose Parade and Party in the Park;  Jeff Kirkpatrick, Lodise Bail Bonds and "Dog & Beth..." Jackson Native Returns for Concert

Rose Parade Grand Marshalls Named

Phil and Sandy DuPuis have been selected to serve as the 2013 Jackson County Rose Parade Grand Marshalls.  Phil DuPuis and Sandy DuPuis are retiring next month and closing their landmark jewelry store, DuPuis Jewelers,  after more than 40 years in business.  The store has been in continuous operation for more than a century.  Other guests today:  Jackson Mayor Martin Griffin;  Jackson County Veterans Affairs Director Dave Welihan with Jim Crawford of Vietnam Veterans of America;  Tom Shirilla, Consumers Energy's "This is My Michigan" Initiative;  Parma Girl Scouts Hanna Farler, Sage Zigler and Austin Waldron hosting a blood drive at United Methodist Church in Parma May 29th;  Pet of the Week with Kathy Brafford, Cascades Humane Society.

Promise Bowl to Return

Garden Clubs Plan Sale

The Jackson Men's Garden Club and Jackson Master Gardeners are teaming up for a huge plant sale this weekend.  Jackson Men's Garden Club members Steve Shotwell and Mark Snyder described the joint venture as an opportunity for the event to become a big spring festival.  The hours are 8am to 12 Noon at the Gumper Building, Jackson County Fairgrounds Saturday.  Other guests:  Cameron McCollum, General Manager of Jackson Area Transportation Authority, along with City Councilpersons Andrew Frounfelker and Michelle Woods provided details of the new bus service for inner-city grocery service.  The routes to Aldi begin Saturday;  Bob Rutan, CEO of Naturs Design and inventor of RemZzzs;  Wilson School teacher Mark Taylor with students Chelsey Williams and Kyaira Varner-Brown;  Jackson Recreation Director Kelli Hoover;  Pet of the Week with Kathy Brafford.  Wednesday's program re-airs on Thursday.
