Mountie Softball Events

1988 Day On Saturday, April 27, the 1988 Northwest Varsity Softball Team will be honored on the 25th anniversary of their appearance in the Class B State Championship game.  Team members will be introduced between games of the scheduled doubleheader with Leslie which begins at 10:00AM,as well as a special tribute will be revealed.  Any members who have not been contacted are asked to call Keith Huntley (517 784-8628) or the Northwest Athletic Department (517 817-4699). NWHS Alumni Softball Day  The Softball program is planning on hosting an Alumni Day for their former VARSITY players.  This will take place on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 at NWHS. The purposes of the day are several with the first being an opportunity to promote a better relationship between our graduates and your High School.  Second, we hope that it will be a day when old relationships are renewed and lots of fun is had by all.  And third, it will be a fundraiser for our program. If we have enough players we will each have two games, one for players Over 30 beginning at 10:00 AM, and one for those Under 30 beginning at 1:30 PM.  We will also have a Home Run…

Lumen Christi Students Return from Jamaica

Lumen Christi students Alex Hooper and Kevin Riley were among a group of students volunteering on a mission trip in Jamaica.  This was the tenth year Fr. Geoff Rose led a spring break trip to an impoverished community.  All shared photos and stories of their work.  Also on today's show:  Matt Shane from MSU Extension Service;  "Money Matters" with Jeff Matzen, Matzen Financial;  Singer-Guitarist Rick Straub (performing at Jackson Coffee Co. Jackson Native Assists Victims Following Marathon Tragedy

Jackson native Dr. Brian Brown (currently an anesthesiologist in Layfayette, IN) was in the stands at the finish line of the Boston Marathon when the bombs exploded.  He assisted the injured and manned the medical tent.  On today's show, Dr. Grant Brown of Brown's Advanced Care recounted his brother's experiences.  Brian Brown's wife, Libby Riggs (also a Jackson native) was running the marathon and was about 2 miles from the finish at the time of the explosions.  While Brown worked to start IVs and help carry patients out, he saw police officers, Marines and other military people taking down barricades so the wounded could be transferred to ambulances waiting on the perimeter.  Dr. Grant Brown also updated viewers on the latest advances at his pharmacy and tips on coping with the allergy season. Indiana Top 60 Recruit Signs with SAU

Thomas Starks Jr., a 6’6 forward from Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran High School has signed with Spring Arbor University. An Indiana Top 60 Recruit, the versatile prep standout recently led the Cadets to the Class 3A State Championship Finals while compiling a 23-5 record. At the state finals, Thomas was recognized as the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude recipient. This prestigious honor is given to the outstanding senior participant in each classification of the boys’ basketball state finals. The winners of this award, who were nominated by their principals, and coaches, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. “Thomas is an extraordinary young man and an outstanding basketball player,” noted SAU Head Coach Ryan Cottingham. “He is an impact player and an impact person.” Starks joins 6’7 forward Jimmy Kodet (Williamston), 6’4 wing Isaac Love, and 5’10 point guard Caleb Hogans (North Farmington) as a member of the 2013 SAU recruiting class.  (Courtesy of Dave Mayotte, Spring Arbor University Sports Information Director)

Public Art Project Unveiled

Artists from Armory Arts unveiled Jackson's submission to the city of St. Joseph's Public Art project, "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" on today's show.  Jean Weir, Lou Cubille, Joy Nelson and Marion Wellman-Horton described the creation of the piece.  The submission will be displayed throughout the summer in downtown St. Joseph.  Also on today's show:  Jackson Mayor Martin Griffin;  Toys of the Month with Phil Wrzesinki from the Toy House;  Theresa Runyan and Tammy Dotson celebrate National Library Week at the Summit Branch of the Jackson District Library;  St. Vincent de Paul Fashion Show preview with Debbie Alford and Karrie Sisk;  Rock Mangus and Karen Merklinger, Mission of Hope Cancer Fund;  JCC student Joe Lorenz on the international mens' march "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" planned for this Friday morning at the North Campus.

The Grande Season Underway

The Grande Golf Club has begun their 2013 season and will again be host this year to JTV's "The Right Approach" with Andy Hawley.  The season begins next month on The Locker Room.  Meanwhile, the Grande Championship will be held on May 19th at the Grande Golf Club and the Senior Grande Championship will be on May 17th.   The cost is $50 and includes prizes and lunch.  To sign up or for more information contact Steven Saari at the Grande at 517-768-9494.
