(5-16-2025, 9:00PM): Two of the three top softball teams in the area battled on Friday in Brooklyn as Hanover Horton faced Columbia Central and split the doubleheader.

An RBI double from Camden Knapp in the 2nd gave CC a 2-1 lead, but the two teams traded big plays early. Four hits in the 3rd inning from the Comets gave them a 5-2 lead including a 2-RBI double from Alexyn DuBois and a 2-RBI single from Hallee Swihart.

Both teams played shutout defense until the 6th inning, an RBI single by Rylee Knapp scored a run for the Eagles to make it a 5-3 HH lead. Two walks for CC in the 7th wasn’t enough to rally as Hanover Horton took game one 5-3.

Alexyn DuBois struck out 13 batters and allowed just two hits on 119 pitches for HH. DuBois and Tori King also had two hits each for the Comets in game one.

An RBI single for Amanda Ley helped Hanover take a 1-0 lead in the 1st to start game two. Tori King would continue her exceptional hitting day in the 4th, hitting an RBI triple to make it a 2-0 Comets lead.

Gianna Evans got Columbia Central on the board in the top of the 6th, hitting an RBI double to make it a 2-1 HH lead. A sacrifice bunt by Rylee Knapp gave CC a run to tie the game at two apiece as the two teams’ offense showed up late in this second game.

An RBI single in the bottom of the 6th from Haley Applegate followed by a sacrifice fly from King gave the Comets a 4-2 lead. Singles by Leelyn Brown and Camden Knapp plus a walk for Kelsey Fausz gave the Golden Eagles loaded bases in the 7th with just one out.

Brown scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one for CC, but a major 2-RBI single from Gianna Evans gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead as she continued her hot batting day. Another wild pitch, this time by the CC defense, allowed the Comets to tie the game at 5 and head to an extra inning.

A double from Rylee Knapp in the 8th set up an RBI single for McKenna Hoskins followed by a wild pitch to make it a 7-5 Columbia lead. The Eagles held on defense in the bottom half of the 8th to win a thrilling game two and split the doubleheader on Friday.

Gianna Evans batted 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles. Three other Eagles batted two hits, and Camden Knapp earned the pitching win. Hanover Horton was led by two hits each from Hallee Swihart, Amanda Ley, and Tori King.

Hanover Horton is now 30-4 overall and Columbia Central improves to 23-6 as both stay close in the race for the Cascades Conference alongside Grass Lake.
