Lumen responds from early deficit, rolls to 35-7 victory over Vandercook By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – The underdogs came out swinging, a playoff team for the first time in nearly  two decades, Vandercook Lake landed the first punch.  And it was a staggering, direct hit that stung for more than a quarter. But once off the mat, Lumen Christi flexed its playoff muscle, and experience, roaring  back from an early deficit to roll to a 35-7 victory in Friday night’s Division 6 pre-district  opener on the road. “I thought they were really well prepared to start the ball game. They caught us flat  footed a little bit,” Lumen coach Herb Brogan said of Vandercook, which led 7-0 until  the final 90 seconds of the first half. “We got the ball for one series and didn’t do  anything.” After falling behind on the opening drive, Lumen scored the game’s final five  touchdowns, including three in a span of 6:15 in the fourth quarter. “We found a way to bounce back and had a great second half,” Brogan added. “It’s very tough, (the season) being over,” a somber Vandercook coach Steve Wolvin  said. “But if you’re going to lose, you…

Vandercook to host Lumen in opening round of state playoffs Friday night By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – One program has a history of this, has made its name in the 10th week of the football season, and beyond. The other hasn’t been to this stage in nearly two decades. But on Friday night, the past of Lumen Christi and Vandercook Lake will be just that — the past. On Friday night, the Titans (6-3) make the short trip to take on Vandercook (8-1) with a certain respect of what it’s taken to get to this point, but with all focus on reaching the next. “This is a new season. Second chance for Panthers

First playoff game in Western history takes team to scene of lopsided affair   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Parma – The top objective this season, and for many that came before it, was to find a way to reach the postseason. Mission accomplished for the 2015 Western football team.   Now, the Panthers might as well get a little greedy.   “We reached our main goal, but we don’t need to be done,” coach Dave Mifsud said of his squad. “We don’t need to be satisfied.”   Having never reached the postseason before, Western closed the regular season in style, beating Dexter High 28-0 to finish 6-3 and kick start a wild celebration.   “I’m not sure I’ve entirely been here long enough to understand what’s happened around here. But Friday night was fun and exciting,” Mifsud, in his third year with the program, said.   Mifsud led Dearborn High to a 108-58 record, 11 playoff berths and two semifinal appearances in D-2 during his tenure there.   “To have that goal reached, and have the community there to support and celebrate with us was special,” Mifsud added. “To hear our names called Sunday night was an absolute…

Vikings set to host first playoff game since 1999 as Livonia Churchill comes to town By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – There’s been plenty of adversity, more ups than downs, and a season to remember for the Jackson High football team. And it’s not over yet. Just days removed from an emotional, and many would call surprising, victory against Lumen Christi in overtime to close out the regular season, Scott Farley and his guys were back to work in preparation for a home playoff date with Livonia Churchill Friday night. And Farley’s hoping it’s another party at Withington Stadium. “I’d love the same support we got last Friday,” the Vikings’ coach said. “A lot of people came out to see if we could take down the giant. Hopefully they all come back this weekend.” They might as well, considering it’s been a while since playoff football came to Jackson for a Vikings game. It was 1999 when Jackson hosted and beat Battle Creek Central 28-13. Western travels to I8 Champ Coldwater for playoff opener

Western is in the playoffs!  For the first time in school history the Panthers (6-3) earned a playoff birth and with that comes a trip to Coldwater.  The Cardinals (9-0) beat Western in week four 34-0 on their way to an Interstate 8 Championship.   Coldwater is averaging just over 33 points per game on offense while its defense is allowing just 9.5 points per game.  On the Western side, the Panthers are scoring 23.4 points per game and giving up 18.5.
