JTV Sports Boys’ Basketball Player of The Year

Player of the Year Mekhi Wingfield, Concord, Senior:  Mekhi Wingfield is the 2024 JTV Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Wingfield was this season’s Big 8 Conference MVP and ended his career in 2nd place as the all-time leading scorer in Concord history. Wingfield averaged 25 points per game and led a young Concord team to a 12-0 conference record. Top 10 Players DeVonta Habern, Napoleon, Senior: DeVonta averaged 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals per game to lead the Napoleon Pirates to a district final appearance. Habern was named the Cascades Conference MVP this season and all-first team the last two seasons. He also set records for steals in a season and a career. He plans to play basketball at the collegiate level and is still undecided on a school. Luke Tropea, Lumen Christi, Junior: Luke Tropea led Lumen Christi to a 22-5 record and a regional championship this season. Lumen Christi had great wins this season including two over 20-4 Michigan Center, 20-4 Napoleon, 25-1 Laingsburg, and Riverview Gabriel Richard (who made the Final Four). Three of Four Girls’ Basketball Teams Advance to Regional Finals By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 11, 2024 9:33 PM ET) Three of four district basketball winning teams from Jackson County advanced to their respective regional finals Monday night. Columbia Central and Concord defeated 22-2 teams in their regional semifinals Monday. Columbia Central defeated former conference foes Blissfield 49-44 in the Division 3 regional at Onsted High School. It was a team effort for the Golden Eagles as Hailey Freshcorn scored 15 points and four players scored as least six points for CCHS.  The Golden Eagles (16-8) face Ypsilanti Prep (21-4) in the regional final at Onsted High School Wednesday at 7 p.m.  Concord defeated a 22-2 squad from Colon 39-36 in the Division 4 regional at Mendon. The Yellowjackets held Colon to 12 points in the first half and made enough free throws in the final four minutes to earn the victory. Colon had defeated Concord (20-5) by double digits earlier in the season. “We were just more mentally focused and took pride in our defense tonight,” Concord Coach ArShawn Parker said.   Cieara Barrett and Grace Thorrez each scored 13 points to lead Concord. Lehman Selected as Region 6 Athletic Administrator of the Year

(March 8, 2024 10:45 AM ET) Concord Athletic Director Matt Lehman has been named Athletic Administrator of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA) for the 2023-24 school year. Lehman will be presented the award in Traverse City on March 16, at the annual MIAAA Mid-Winter Conference in which over 500 athletic directors participate.  Lehman is a 1985 graduate of Whittemore-Prescott High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in physical education and business teacher education, a master’s degree from Spring Arbor University in Education, and an administrative certification through the MASSP Path to Leadership program. Lehman began his career in education as a teacher at Tawas Area Schools and the Whittemore-Prescott adult education program before heading to Concord Schools in 1993.
