Jackson County Health Department Updates Mask Guidance

(March 2, 2022 3:20 PM)  Today, the Jackson County Health Department updated their mask guidance for face mask wearing indoors: On February 25th the CDC updated their guidance on wearing masks indoors as well as the requirement for face masks on school buses and vans.  These changes come as a result of the drop in COVID-19 cases in the country and continue to move us towards a system that asks the individual to assess risk and determine the best actions to take.  Anyone 2 years old and older must continue to wear a mask when traveling on a public airplane, bus, or train and while in a transportation hub such as an airport or bus station.  Masks are no longer required on buses or vans operated by public or private school systems. The guidance for wearing a mask indoors is tied to the current level of community transmission.  The level for each county is assessed and can be found on the CDC webpage.  Jackson County is currently in the Medium category.  The CDC has outlined prevention steps you should take based on your community level.  Regardless of community level, settings such as healthcare, nursing homes, prisons, and other congregate care…

MDHHS Updates COVID-19 Guidance for K-12 Schools

(January 10, 2022 6:11 PM) Today, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) updated its K-12 school quarantine and isolation guidance to reflect recent updates made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that modifies or shortens the quarantine and isolation periods to as short as five days in some circumstances. Changes include language on isolation guidance that allow students, teachers and staff to return to school sooner after infection, under certain circumstances. Quarantine guidance is also updated, allowing students, as well as staff and teachers, to return to school sooner after a school-based exposure.   The state is committed to ensuring Michigan students and educators are as safe as possible in the classroom. When layered prevention strategies such as vaccination, masking, distancing, testing, isolation and quarantine are applied consistently, school-associated transmission of COVID-19 is significantly reduced. MDHHS continues to recommend universal masking in K-12 settings. This guidance will help K-12 schools maintain in-person learning by outlining mitigation strategies when students, teachers and staff are exposed to a COVID-19 case in a school setting. “We always advocate for preventative measures that keep our children safe,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, MDHHS chief medical executive. “Children of school…

SAU Nursing Student Inspires Scholarship for First Responders

Steven Wright with co-workers at Henry Ford Allegiance Health.  Courtesy photo. (April 16, 2021 3:05 PM) Many lives have been disrupted during the coronavirus pandemic, particularly those of  front-line healthcare workers. Spring Arbor University student and registered nurse (RN) Steven Wright is no exception. Now, Wright’s story has inspired a scholarship to help other SAU nursing students as they prepare to serve others in their careers. Wright’s career in nursing began in his 20s, when he decided to obtain his Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) license. He loved the excitement of being an EMT, but he decided to further his education to become an RN. Wright graduated from Jackson College in 2011 and has now been working as a nurse for 10 years. He currently works for Henry Ford Allegiance Health.  At the beginning of 2020, before the pandemic reached the United States, Wright was working on a medical intensive care unit (MICU) focused on treating patients with respiratory issues. At the time, Wright and his MICU coworkers couldn’t have known how busy their work would become just a few months into the new year. As the pandemic spread, Wright and his wife, Lisa, agreed that it would be best for…
