(January 20, 2022 10:10 AM) The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has issued an epidemic order to further protect residents in nursing homes across the state by ensuring residents have the opportunity to get up-to date on COVID-19 vaccines at the nursing home where they reside.  “With the Omicron variant rapidly spreading across our state and cases of COVID-19 continuing to remain high, we want to make sure our most vulnerable Michiganders are protected from the virus,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “The COVID-19 vaccine is our best defense against the virus, and we want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to get up to date.”  Under the order, nursing homes must offer on-site doses of COVID-19 vaccines to residents who are not up to date as of Jan. 20, 2022, within 30 days of the effective date of the order.  Nothing in the order requires nursing home residents to get vaccinated. Nursing homes are encouraged to provide informational materials about COVID-19 vaccines so that residents can make informed choices. Materials can be located on MDHHS’ Long-Term Care COVID-19 Plan website.  For residents who are unable to make their own medical decisions, nursing homes are required to contact the individual legally authorized to make medical decisions on behalf of the resident and make them aware of the availability of COVID-19 booster doses on site.   Nursing homes must document a resident’s consent or refusal of an offered COVID-19 vaccine. For residents…

(January 19, 2022 3:23 PM)  Michigan reported 86,009* coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 1,832,716. Michigan is reporting 501** COVID-19-related deaths today with the state total at 28,980.   *Note on cases (01/19/2022): Today's daily case count represents new referrals of confirmed cases to the MDSS since the last web update report. Over the five days (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), the average number of new confirmed cases is ~17,202 per day. **The deaths announced today includes 346 deaths identified during a Vital Records review. (January 19, 2022 12:00 PM)  The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12:00 PM today, there are 34,456 positive cases (cumulative), and 471 deaths (cumulative)*.   There are 393 new cases and 5 new deaths since yesterday’s report. As of January 11, there are 48 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19.  The Jackson County Health Department has announced a change in reporting effective Oct. 6, 2021.  Cases defined as probable will be reported in cumulative case and death counts.  As additional methods of testing besides the PCR test have become more common, the amount of cases classified as probable has increased and are included to provide a more accurate picture of disease in our community.  Cumulative recovered, as of January 19:  27,746** The cumulative numbers posted on Mondays include the data from Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received.  *These numbers do not reflect any cases or deaths identified through Michigan Department of Corrections.  Their numbers are listed under a separate category and reported by the state at Michigan Statistics.  (January 13, 2022 10:12 PM)  As COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to climb, Henry Ford Health System today made a public plea for blood donations because of a critically low blood supply affecting hospitals nationwide.  During a press briefing, HFHS officials said the pandemic has exacerbated the nation’s blood supply, leading three national blood organizations to declare a national crisis. Henry Ford’s blood bank is running critically low – with a one to two-day supply on hand. Adnan Munkarah, M.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer said that while the health system has not canceled any surgeries, one traumatic event could drain its supply. “Our ask to the community is to please step forward and give a blood donation,” Dr. Munkarah said. “Anyone 17 years or older is eligible and the process take about one hour. (January 13, 2022 10:17 AM)  The Jackson County Health Department has issued an update of quarantine and isolation guidance: At the end of December, the CDC announced an update to their quarantine and isolation guidance.   Further clarification and an update from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) on managing COVID-19 exposures in K-12 school settings came out early this week.  In response to the updates from federal and state authorities, the Jackson County Health Department has also updated our quarantine and isolation guidance. It is important to understand the definitions of the terms used in the guidance documents ·       Isolation:  You isolate when you are sick or know you are infected with the virus. ·       Quarantine: You quarantine when you have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19 and are waiting to see if you get sick. ·       Fully Vaccinated:  Someone is considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after having received the 2nd  dose of a mRNA vaccine or 2 weeks after a single dose vaccine. ·       Up to Date with Vaccines: Someone who has received all COVID-19 vaccines they are eligible to receive.
