Michigan Center, Columbia Central and JPEC Make Moves as New MHSAA Classifications Announced

(March 28, 2022 11:03 AM)  Classifications for Michigan High School Athletic Association elections and postseason tournaments for the 2022-23 school year have been announced, with enrollment breaks for postseason tournaments posted to each sport’s page on the MHSAA Website. Classifications for the upcoming school year are based on a second semester count date, which for MHSAA purposes was Feb. 9. The enrollment figure submitted for athletic classification purposes may be different from the count submitted for school aid purposes, as it does not include students ineligible for athletic competition because they reached their 19th birthday prior to September 1 of the current school year and will not include alternative education students if none are allowed athletic eligibility by the local school district. All sports’ tournaments are conducted with schools assigned to equal or nearly equal divisions, with lines dependent on how many schools participate in those respective sports. For 2022-23, there are 750 tournament-qualified member schools. Schools recently were notified of their classification, and sport-by-sport divisions were posted to the MHSAA Website today (March 28). MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said schools may not subsequently lower their enrollment figure. However, if revised enrollment figures are higher and indicate that a school should be playing…

Casey is First All-State Athlete at JPEC

Jackson Prep & Early College runner Daniel Casey earned all-state honors at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Jackson Prep & Early College runner Daniel Casey proclaimed himself as the king of the first mile at local cross country meets. Unfortunately for the JPEC runner, there are 3.1 miles in a standard high school cross country event. A little coaching taught him the value of pace. That paid off on Saturday as Casey finished 23rd at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway. He finished the 5K course in 17 minutes, 33 seconds, becoming the school’s first all-state athlete. The top 30 runners in each division earn all-state honors. A year ago, Casey finished 65th at the state meet. He ran nearly 30 seconds faster on Saturday during a warm and breezy day at MIS. “We came up with a strategy to start out slow and catch runners in the end,” Casey said. “If you ran smart today, you could take advantage of that (temperatures in the 70s).”…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 7, 2020 7:11 PM) Ten high school cross country runners finished in the top 30 in their respective races at the Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. The top 30 in each division earn all-state honors. COVID-19 restrictions split the divisions into two races – one with teams who finished first or second in their respective regional races and another for the third-place teams at regionals and individual qualifiers. The MHSAA was trying to limit the number of athletes in each race. Fans were also restricted to the grandstands, items like tents (where people would congregate) were banned, and teams had a checkout and check-in times. Here is a listing off all of the Jackson Country runners who participated in the two-day event. D-1 Tyler Lowery of Jackson High School shook off a COVID-19 scare on Monday and placed 135th in the Division 1 race on Friday. He finished the 5K course in…
