Zeller Inducted into Jackson Golf Hall of Fame

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Sometimes those who wait will be rewarded. That happened Sunday for Jackson area golfer Greg Zeller. Zeller was inducted into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Ella Sharp Park Golf Course Sunday after noon. He has won 23 local tournaments, all after the age of 40. “I didn’t play in any tournament at a younger age because I was working at Commonwealth and then teaching,” Zeller said before the ceremony. “I got a late start.” Zeller played high school golf and basketball at East Jackson and then Greenville University. “Greg’s success came later than most,” Hall of Fame chairman Gary Kalahar said in a press release when Zeller was announced as the inductee earlier in the summer. “But once he started winning, he has consistently remained among the city’s top competitors. His record over the last 20 years puts him in the top echelon of those who have played the game here.” He has won a record-tying six Tournament of Champions titles and lost in the playoffs…
Western Defeats NW in Rivalry Football Game

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Only on Friday the 13th can two high school football teams each claim to play home games on the same night. It happened in the rivalry contest between Western and Northwest high schools on Friday night. Just seconds in to the second half an electrical issue caused the power to go out a Western’s football field. Following 25 minutes of darkness, the two sides agreed to move the game to Northwest’s new turf field for the remainder of the second half. Western won the game 43-6, but Mountie fans enjoyed a glimpse of the redone stadium with a turf field, new lighting, and other amenities. The official opening for the varsity football team at NW is scheduled for Friday against Lumen Christi Catholic High School. Western improves to 2-1 on the season, 1-1 in the Interstate-8 Conference, while the Mounties are 1-2 overall, 1-2 in the conference. EJ May be Top Team in Jackson

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports The East Jackson High School girls’ golf team may be in an unfamiliar position next Friday at the Jackson County Golf Outing at Cascades Golf Course. The Lady Trojans may be the team to beat. So far, so good for East Jackson. The Lady Trojans have won all of the Cascades Conference jamborees, won invitationals, and have been the highest finishing school at several events. But it has been a long time coming for the Lady Trojans. East Jackson teacher Ray Hill took over the program more than a dozen years ago with three simple rules – having fun, improving every year, and being competitive with a chance to win. Hill has taken on a number of projects in those years, with payoffs a few years down the road. “I start recruiting kids in middle school and look for softball players,” Hill said. “It doesn’t matter if they haven’t played golf … they spend the first year learning and figuring out which end of the club to hold.” Senior team…
