Lean on D

Lumen hockey success will depend on play of defensemen and goaltenders   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – The goals will come, that much Mike Wartella knows.   The Lumen Christi hockey coach has two of his top-three scorers from last year back in the mix.   But if success is going to find its way to the Lumen squad this winter, it’s going to do so on the back end, where some veteran defensemen will have to assist a pair of goalies still getting their feet wet in the game of hockey, and their position between the pipes.   “We graduated some key players from last year,” Wartella said, “but the most glaring was Michael Todd.”   The three-year varsity net minder was the backbone for the Titans, playing in all 26 games last year while finishing with a 13-12-1 record.   He had a 2.65 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage to go with one shutout.   Needless to say, he was good — very good.   “Right now we have two guys that are learning the game,” Wartella said of his goaltending due, senior John Fleming and sophomore Brogan Sullivan. “They are very hard workers…

Spring Arbor Men’s Basketball signs Shelby’s Jeff Beckman

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men’s basketball program is excited to announce the signing of Jeff Beckman. Beckman, a 6-foot-5 forward, is currently a senior at Shelby High School in Shelby, Michigan. He is the first recruit from the 2016 recruiting class to join the Cougar family.   A four year varsity player, Beckman took his game to another level as a junior where he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game, and led the Tigers to a 23-2 record that included a regional championship. He was selected First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Area and AP All-State Special Mention. Beckman was also recognized by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) as one of the Best in Class C Top 20.   “Jeffrey is the consummate team player. He is willing to do anything to help his teammates become better,” stated longtime Shelby head coach Richard Zoulek. “After working with Jeff for four years of varsity basketball, it has been my pleasure to see him develop into a very nice young man and a pretty good basketball player too. Spring Arbor is fortunate to have Jeffrey and his parents join their basketball family.”   Jeff is…

MHSAA Advances Concussion Care Efforts, Announces Preliminary Data

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Dec. 9 – The Michigan High School Athletic Association this school year requested for the first time that member schools report possible concussions by their student-athletes during both practice and competition. Preliminary data from the fall season shows two percent of more than 100,000 high school athletes experienced concussions, and 27 percent of high schools responding reported that none of their athletes experienced concussions while participating in MHSAA sports. The MHSAA received data from 744 – or 99 percent – of its member high schools at the end of the fall season. The average number of concussions reported by member high schools through Dec. 4, 2015, was 3.2 concussions per school. Fifty-two percent of reporting schools stated they had two or fewer concussions by athletes this fall. Football, the fall season’s most-played sport with 39 percent of all fall participants, revealed 79 percent of all concussions reported for the season. Boys soccer, with nearly 14 percent of fall sport participants, revealed 11 percent of all concussions reported. Data collected by the MHSAA remains preliminary, in part, because results noted include pending reports that have not been verified. After completion of these follow-up reports, the final number of…

It will be different

After run to Breslin Center, Hanover looks to regroup and rebuild on the fly   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Hanover– Things will be different, much different.   That’s a fact the Hanover-Horton boys basketball team will have to deal with this winter.   That’s the challenge Chad Mortimer has for his guys as the 2015-16 season takes flight.   “We’re working hard, and we know it’s going to take some time,” Mortimer said. “But that’s the goal, to get better every single day. We expect to compete and play our best basketball as the year goes on.”   Hanover had a magical run last year.   But that’s how it’s looked at now, magic of last year.   The Comets finished the season 24-2, falling to Flint Beecher 71-43 in the Class C semifinals.   But from that team, just four guys are back and the current group has five new starters.   “Making a run in the tournament last year, I mean, there’s nothing else like it,” Mortimer said. “It’s what basketball and sports is all about. But that’s done and over with. Now it’s this group’s time. It’s their turn.”   Their turn and their challenge…

The next game, the next goal

Veteran Cardinals hoops team seeks to take one night, one game at a time   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Michigan Center – Travis Gaddy, like many coaches in many sports, had made a habit over the years of laying out a list of goals he and his Michigan Center boys basketball squad would like to accomplish before all was said and done.   He’s taken a slightly different approach this winter.   “Our goal is the next game,” Gaddy said. “We want to focus on one thing at a time, not get caught up looking too far down the road. We feel if we can do that, we’re going to take care of business as the season moves forward.”   It takes a veteran group to maintain that sort of focus for an entire season, but the Cardinals may just have the roster to do so.   A year ago, with nearly half the main contributors still in the sophomore grade level, Michigan Center rolled to a 15-5 regular season and eventual playoff-opening loss to Vandercook Lake.   “We had real good balance, despite how young we were,” Gaddy said. “We had guys that bought in and two…
