Valkuchak’s Win ‘Meant to Be’ With Spring Thaw Championship

Bret Valkuchak watches his birdie putt head toward the hole on 18 during the Spring Thaw Tournament at Cascades Golf Course Sunday. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (April 28, 2024 7:45 PM ET) After Bret Valkuchak shot a 66 in the Jackson City Match Play golf tournament last summer – and lost – he was not sure winning a major tournament in Jackson was in the cards. But he did not give up. Valkuchak hit the punch shot of his life on the 17th hole for a birdie Sunday giving him the lead heading into the final hole at Cascades Golf Course. With an easy par, Valkuckak won his first major shooting a pair of 71s at the Spring Thaw Tournament. Valkuchak and Nic Reynolds separated themselves from the pack and battled the final nine of the 36-hole tournament. A bogey by Reynolds on 17 gave Valkuchak the lead for good. “I have been so close so many times … it was not my time,” Valkuchak said of his chase for a major tournament win in Jackson County. “I pressed my luck … and it was just meant to be.” Valkuchak was one stroke down heading into 17 – a…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (April 28, 2024 7:30 AM ET) High school sports are generally considered a chance for student-athletes to prove his/her worth on a field, course, or court. Northwest High School athlete Cody Rowe is using the sport of golf to teach life lessons. Along the way, he may be impressing college scouts for the future. A year after missing a chance to qualify individually for the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals by one stroke, Rowe is back for more. “Golf is being able to come back from a bad shot or a bad round,” Rowe said. “You have to keep a positive attitude in golf.” Rowe has played golf for more than a dozen years living within a mile of Hankerd Hills Golf Course. He has participated on the Mercer/Jackson Junior Golf Tour for a number of years. He spends most of his summers playing golf with teammates at Hankerd. “My friends and I play a lot of golf together throughout the summer,” Rowe said. “Sometimes four or five times per week … other times every day.” Rowe had a solid season for the Mounties as a freshman and shot a 79 during the…
