By Jeff Steers JTV Sports If Wilbur “Shooter” Flatch from the movie “Hoosiers” was describing the Western High School boys’ varsity basketball team this season, he may mention that they didn’t have any tree toppers, but were scrappy, and could chuck it from the cheap seats. Columbia Central High School found out the hard way. The Panthers created more than two dozen turnovers in a 68-27 win at home on Tuesday to start the season. Junior Trey Cottingham finished with 26 points and six steals for Western (1-0). “Our energy level was good tonight,” Cottingham said. “We are small, but we have a lot of heart and intensity.” Western had the opportunity to play the entire bench because of the score. The Panthers went hard until the last whistle of the contest. “We have to speed up the game and take advantage of the other team’s guard play,” Coach Ryan Mulnix said. “We aren’t very big, but we are asking our 6-foot, 2-inch guys to play 6-5 or 6-6.”…
Frohm, Defense Leads VCL to Opening-Night Hoops Win

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Following most cross country meets, Vandercook Lake High School athlete Andrew Frohm wanders off by himself into oblivion – hardly talking to anyone. It could be called lone-wolf syndrome. That all changes when he has a few teammates behind him. Frohm scored 23 points and led the court in verbal discussions in a 56-51 win over Springport High School to start the 2019-2020 boys’ basketball season. Frohm, an all-state cross country runner, hit a number of big 3-point shots in the opening-night contest. “The difference (between cross country and basketball) is I have a team to back me up,” Frohm said. “Some guys were out tonight, so I knew I was going to have to play a lot. “We figured out that we were not going to win if we didn’t start playing defense.” The Jayhawks proved that, falling behind 21-12 after the first eight minutes of action. Springport’s Shawn Vogt hit three, 3-point baskets in the quarter as everything seems to fall in for the Spartans. “We…

Jackson United Hockey Falls 2-1 in Overtime
Jackson United team captain Jacob Cook (center) looks for the puck during a hockey game against Portage Northern High School at Optimist Ice Arena on Saturday. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Sometime – real soon – Jackson United Coach Matt Grimes hopes the Vikings win games like the one at Optimist Ice Arena against Portage Northern High School on Saturday. The Vikings lost 2-1 in overtime despite having a number of 5-on-3 chances late in the game. Jackson United – a combination of players from Jackson, Western, Michigan Center, and Northwest high schools – is 1-4 under first-year Coach Grimes. “We outplayed that team tonight … this is one we should have won,” Grimes said. “This was a tough loss tonight.” Jackson United has 17 players on the team with more than half of them being freshmen or sophomores. Grimes said the Vikings were gassed at the end of regulation. “We roll with pretty much 10 guys (two lines), so overtime is not in our favor,” Grimes said. Neither team took advantage of power-play opportunities in the first period. The Huskies had two chances and Jackson one. Portage Northern outshot Jackson 7-6 in the first period. Drew Bonser of Western…
