Northwest Girls Basketball Playing Like a Contender

Ella Bontrager (photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — Ryan Carroll has a straightforward goal for the rest of the regular season. Sure, it may seem a little lofty. No doubt, it wasn’t something he envisioned when the 2017-18 season began for his Northwest girls basketball team. But things, including expectations, can change as a season takes shape. “We want to finish the regular season 19-1,” Carroll said with a rye laugh. “We feel we can compete with and beat anybody on our schedule. With that said, we have to play to our full potential every night. That’s the goal. Play our best basketball every night when we step on the floor. If we do that, we like our chances to win a conference title, a district title and then see what happens.” The laugh wasn’t so much about what he said, but more of how it would be perceived. This is Northwest, not Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day or some other power. But hey, based on what his girls have done so far, why not dream big? Following a win Tuesday night over Hastings, the Mounties were 7-1 on the season. Few games…

SAU Hoops Rolling Right Along, Ranked in Top 25

Paul Marandet on his way to 26 points vs. Bethel (photo courtesy Spring Arbor University)  By Mike Moore Staff Writer Spring Arbor — One point here and there, that’s what separated the Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team from an eighth straight victory and an oh-so-close Tuesday night at home against Bethel College. The Cougars had their chances, but in the end, fell to the No. 11-ranked team by a 63-62 final. Disappointing, to be sure, but just a bump in what has been an otherwise smooth road for SAU in the 2017-18 season. “We’re having a lot of fun right now,” coach Ryan Cottingham said. “The guys work ethic and attitude and the way they’ve played together has been excellent.” Prior to Tuesday’s loss to Bethel, SAU had won seven games in a row, now holds a 16-3 overall record and finds itself as the 16th-ranked team in the country. “This is a real unselfish team,” said Cottingham, who’s in his 19th season with the program. “They share the ball. We have great chemistry.” Speaking shortly before Tuesday’s loss, Cottingham was asked about the 16 wins in 18 games. “If you’d offered me 16-2, I thought you’d be crazy,”…

Kyle Minder Lumen Christi JTV Player of the Year

Minder fueled Lumen’s run to title, named JTV Sports Player of the Year

By Mike Moore                   Photo: Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Staff Writer   Jackson — He was the pulse of things moving forward, just a piece to the grander puzzle, but integral to the foundation of what this team wanted to be, and ultimately was, in another brilliant fall season.   The Lumen Christi football team ended 2017 on top yet again, a feat made possible by a roster loaded with depth, one of the most iconic high school coaches ever, and, somewhere mixed in, a humble yet dependable player in Kyle Minder.   The JTV Sports Player of the Year, to be exact.   “The fact he was such a great player on both sides of the ball is what made him so essential,” coach Herb Brogan said.   That was one way to put it.   Minder, the senior running back and linebacker was, in fact, center stage on both sides of the ball — and rarely left the field.   On the offensive side of things he finished the year with 1,015 yards rushing, 23 touchdowns on the ground and another three through the air.   In the state final, where…
