Lumen and Western boys basketball resume rivalry Friday night

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   The win-loss records are nearly identical, in opposite fashion, that is.   And as the Lumen Christi (2-6) and Western (7-2) boys basketball teams enter Friday night’s tilt in Parma, the hardwood rivals do so after much different results earlier in the week.   “We beat a good Harper Creek team,” Lumen coach Pat Neville said of his guys and their 61-51 victory three nights ago, just the second of the season. “We’re excited to try and put two solid games together.”   On the flip side, Western was an impressive 7-1 entering Tuesday’s tilt with Marshall, and then got handled 52-27.   “We’re looking forward to the game,” coach Ryan Mulnix said. “After Marshall, you want to get back out there as quick as possible. But really, we had our best practice of the season Wednesday. Now we have to see how they respond.”   The game is set for 7:30 p.m. at Western.   “The two big kids are key for them,” Neville said of Western’s Steele Fortress and Desmond Price.   Without much size to answer with, the key will be Lumen slowing those two down.   The Panthers’ pair inside…

Slow Start Dooms Jackson Despite Inspired Comeback and Wild Finish

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — A home-town eruption for the first time all night was in full force. Bleachers rocked and energy soared moments after Rarshiem Owens drilled a 3-pointer from the wing and a 16-point deficit had evaporated to just one. It was a scene of bedlam at Jackson High Friday night, showing just how good this Vikings team can be, and just how frustrating this eventual four-point loss to Grand Ledge really was. “There were just so many things that could have changed this game and moved it in our direction,” coach Dan Crowley said of the 52-48 setback. “If we make half the shots inside that we missed, we win this game. … I’m very proud of the way we fought back and didn’t give up. We got it down to one and almost had a steal with a chance to take the lead. So the fact we didn't give up was key, but it’s rough losing another one to them.” In the end, though, Jackson dug a grave in the first half that was too much to climb out of. Grand Ledge led 14-10 after the first quarter, but poured in 22 second-quarter…

Vikings return home, open 2017 with key battle against Grand Ledge

(Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — Two straight losses, three straight wins and a break to calm things down.   That was how 2016 ended for the Jackson boys basketball team.   On Friday night, 2017 begins with a bang, and a team headed to town who hasn’t lost to the Vikings in more than two seasons.   “They have great size and they pass the ball well, especially inside,” Jackson coach Dan Crowley said of Grand Ledge, which travels to Jackson for a 6 p.m. tip Friday night. “We’re going to have to help with the big guys. We’re going to be overmatched in terms of size, we know that. I think they are capable of shooting, but they’ve lost some of their key guys from last year. But that is a good team that’s well coached. We have to be ready to go.”   Jackson started the winter season with a pair of losses, but then ended the calendar year with three wins — the last two not even close.   “Sexton was a good win,” Crowley said. “I think the other two games were games we should have won…

Western’s quick start to season fueling confidence for run at elusive conference title

(Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Parma — It’s been a while.   Actually, it’s been “way too long,” as Western boys basketball coach Ryan Mulnix put it.   Speaking earlier this week about the last time the Panthers’ hoops program captured a league crown, Mulnix admitted he didn’t know if his guys knew the duration of time that’s passed.   “It was 1995,” he said simply. “I don’t even know if the guys know what exact year it was, but they know it’s been a while. We’re due for one.”   And so far, the Panthers are playing like a team possessed to go get it.   As of Wednesday afternoon, the Panthers were the only unbeaten team in I-8 play, with a 2-0 mark. Overall, Western sits with a 6-1 record, with the lone loss a 58-57 setback to St. John’s on Dec. 20.   “This is a team that likes to push the ball,” Mulnix said when asked what the keys have been so far. “We play solid defense, and these guys never quit on the boards.”   After going 12-9 a year ago, the Panthers brought back five varsity veterans,…
