Photo by Matthew Mitchell, MSU Athletic Communications Willis already a major contributor with Michigan State football team By Mike Moore Staff Writer When he first got to Michigan State as a freshman safety, the goal was to maybe see the field on special teams. If that wasn’t in the cards his first year, Khari Willis was ready to be redshirted and absorb as much as he could with the Spartans’ football team. A few months removed from that initial objective, Willis stood in the end zone at Michigan Stadium, the screaming silence of more than 100,000 fans surrounding him in utter disbelief. And beneath him lay Jalen Watts-Jackson. “And all I could say was ‘you just won us the game,’” Willis recalled. From the practice fields of Lumen Christi, the main star at Withington Stadium, to front and center in one of the most memorable Michigan State-Michigan games ever. It’s been a wild ride for Willis the past 12 months or so, but as the former Titans standout put it, “it’s been a dream come true.” “When the season started, I expected to come in here and be redshirted or see…

BROOKLYN, Mich. (Oct. 20, 2015) — Michigan International Speedway officials are proud to partner with FireKeepers Casino, another Michigan-based company, to bring fans the FireKeepers Casino 400 on June 12. FireKeepers Casino sponsored Pole Day for both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at MIS in 2015. Company representatives saw first-hand how well their brand fit with NASCAR fans so it was only natural to increase its involvement in the series. “FireKeepers Casino Hotel green-lights sponsorship at Michigan International Speedway for the FireKeepers Casino 400,” stated Homer A. Mandoka, Tribal Council Chairman of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. “We are grooved to bring the fans the best experience with the horsepower of NASCAR.” FireKeepers Casino has found all its guests want an authentic experience and there’s camaraderie among casino-goers. Last year they discovered NASCAR has that, too, as NASCAR fans share a very similar attribute – they all want to be a part of something big. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with FireKeepers Casino and its increased involvement with NASCAR for the FireKeepers Casino 400 in June,” MIS President Roger Curtis said. “The key to successful partnerships is finding organizations which have similar goals. Michigan International Speedway and…
ALBION, MI - Albion College senior running back Colin Parks gashed Adrian College for 102 yards last Saturday, and he was rewarded by being named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Offensive Player of the Week. It is the first time the senior from Southfield (who prepped at Lathrup High School) has ever gained the MIAA Player of the Week award. Parks averaged nearly seven yards per carry against the league’s second-best team against the run. Parks scored on runs of 2 and 20 yards in the first half, giving him 11 rushing touchdowns on the season, a figure that ranks seventh in NCAA Division III. “Anytime you rush for more than 100 yards against Adrian you are doing a good job,” Albion Head Coach Craig Rundle said. “He gets the tough yards and does a great job on pass protection.” Parks has rushed for 715 yards through six games this season. His 7.2-yard average is 17th-best among Division III running backs. Albion, 6-0 overall and 3-0 against MIAA rivals, is preparing for a home date against Trine University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday on the Schmidt-Fraser Field inside Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University freshman Bethany Balcer (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian) and senior Kristina Sobel (Shelby Township, MI/Dakota) have been named the Crossroads League Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The award is the third straight, and fourth of the season, for Balcer while Sobel earned the distinction for the first time in her career. In the NAIA Game of the Week last Wednesday night, Balcer scored the game-winning goal to lift the Cougars to a 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten No. 8 Grace College 1-0. She currently ranks sixth in the NAIA in points, sixth in goals and 14th in assists. Sobel anchored an SAU defense that recorded two shutouts last week, giving the team five clean sheets in the last six matches. Grace and Bethel were only able to mount a combined eight total shots against the Cougars, and only two of those attempts were on target. Spring Arbor…

Jayhawks edge past Michigan Center in thriller, head to Manchester to determine Cascades Conference champ By Mike Moore Staff Writer Michigan Center – With roughly 30 seconds to play in the first half, Noah Hancock picked himself up off the turf, a badly twisted knee preventing him from getting to the sideline in any sort of quick matter, or without assistance. With exactly 30.3 seconds to play in regulation, Hancock picked a fumble off the turf, a host of defenders preventing him from running, in any matter at all. So he dove. And with that, the Vandercook Lake football team is 7-0 for the first time since 1970. “Another boring game. Another boring win,” Vandercook coach Steve Wolvin said with a rye smile moments after his guys blocked a last-second field goal and prevailed with a 30-27 victory at Michigan Center Friday night. Hancock, who was injured at the end of the first half, picked up his own fumble in the waning seconds of regulation and scored on an 8-yard touchdown run to put Vandercook up for good. Some 28 seconds later the Jayhawks blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt to preserve the victory. “I don’t think we’ve practiced as…
