Six Earn Golf All-State Honors

Ben Maino. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (June 29, 2022 6:45 AM) Jackson County was well represented on the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association all-state teams. Six local golfers earned honors released Tuesday by the coaching association. Brady Applegate of Hanover-Horton High School and Ben Maino of East Jackson earned first-team honors as voted on by coaches.  Applegate earned a top-10 medal at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state meet. He shot a two-day total of 154 at the state meet. Maino finished one stroke behind Applegate in the race for the Cascades Conference medalist honors. He was a state-qualifier in Division 4 in 2022 and 2021.  Colin Norton of Jackson earned honorable-mention honors in Division 1. Norton finished third at the Division 1 regional tournament at Cascades Golf Course.  Ryder Pickering of Hanover-Horton earned honorable-mention honors in Division 3. Pickering helped lead the Comets to a Cascades Conference title and tied for first at the regional tournament. Nash Hanchett and Charlie Saunders of Lumen Christi earned honorable-mention honors for the Titans. Norton, Kulka Earn Jackson County Titles at Mercer Event

Junior Colin Norton and senior Natalie Kulka earned titles at the R.W. Mercer Jackson Junior Golf Tour event at Cascades Golf Course on Monday. The Mercer Tour winner at Cascades is named as the Jackson Junior County champion. Norton shot a 6-under-par 66 at Cascades in winning the tournament and the age 15/16 group. Kulka won the girls’ event with an 81 and also won the girls’ 16-up event for 18 holes. Jayce Swihart won the boys’ 10-under for nine holes with a 46; Sam Swihart won the boys 11-13 title for nine holes with a 41; Jake Brafford won the boys 13/14 event for 18 holes scoring an 88; and Justin Bunch shot a 2-under-par 70 claiming the boys’ age 17/18 event. Camryn Boldt won the girls’ 13-up nine hole event scoring a 66, and Maggie Loomis won the girls’ 13-15 event for 18 holes scoring a 134. The Mercer Tour will take a couple of weeks off with the next event on July 13 at Burr Oak Golf Course.  …

Parker Named Jackson Head Football Coach

(June 24, 2022 12:08 PM) Jackson Public Schools announced on Friday that Antonio Parker will be the new head football coach at the school. Parker replaces Scott Farley who was hired to be the athletic director at Western High School. Parker has served as an assistant coach for 18 years and has served in a number of capacities at the school.  He served as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator for the last five seasons. “I am excited to get to work and to continue to take Jackson football and Jackson Public Schools to new heights,” Parker said in a press release. Supt. Jeff Beal said he is excited about the hire. “I believe in his connection to our students, ability to develop our young players into great men, and his vision for our program moving forward,” Beal said. “I think it is going to be a very exciting year.”
