Lumen Christi’s Keegan Smith commits to CMU football

Lumen Christi offensive lineman Keegan Smith has committed to play in Mount Pleasant for Central Michigan University's football program. Lumen Christi's football program is coming off of their third straight state championship win. JTV Sports | June 25th, 2019 | Gabriel Schray Keegan Smith will become a Chippewa and play for Central Michigan University's football program, he announced via Twitter. New head coach Jim McElwain will benefit from his verbal commit to the program, as he will become a member of the 2020 recruiting class for the University. 57-year-old McElwain was 22-12 over parts of three seasons at Florida. He won 19 games and earned SEC Coach of the Year honors. At Colorado State, he turned the Rams into a 10-win program and second-place finisher in the Mountain West Conference. At Alabama he served as offensive coordinator and formed a relationship with CMU athletic director Michael Alford. he also coached at Michigan State from 2003 to 2005. He’ll be hoping to turn around a Chippewas football team that went a program-worst 1-11 in their 2018 campaign. 2018-19 MHSAA Parade of Champions

A total of 105 schools won one or more of the 128 Michigan High School Athletic Association team championships awarded during 2018-19, with two teams earning the first Finals championship in any sport in their schools’ histories. JTV Sports | June 20th, 2019 | Gabriel Schray Ypsilanti Lincoln celebrated its first MHSAA Finals championship by winning the Division 1 boys basketball title in the winter, and Millington claimed its first by earning the Division 3 softball championship this spring. A total of 19 schools won two or more championships this school year, paced by two schools winning four: Pewamo-Westphalia won in boys basketball, girls basketball, competitive cheer and girls track & field; and Marquette won in boys skiing, girls skiing, girls swimming & diving and girls track & field. Five schools won three MHSAA Finals championships: Bronson, Detroit Country Day, East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern and Hudsonville Unity Christian. Winning two titles in 2018-19 were Chassell, Detroit Catholic Central, Houghton, Ishpeming, Ishpeming Westwood, Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep, Lake Orion, Negaunee, Ontonagon, Sault Ste. Jackson Native Joins Biggest Hitters in Golf for World Long Drive Tour

Chad Cesarz, a Jackson, Michigan native, has been selected to partake in the Volvik World Long Drive Championship event. The World Long Drive Association is an organization that brings together golf’s longest hitters from around the globe.  JTV Sports | June 10th, 2019 | Gabriel Schray Despite having to battle excessive wind conditions Mesquite, Nevada, six hitters became the latest names to punch their ticket into the 2019 Volvik World Long Drive Championship. This included Jackson, Michigan native Chad Cesarz. The Lumen Christi alum will take part in the next Volvik World Long Drive Championship event, which is scheduled to take place August 30th through September 4th. The two day event will be held in Thackerville, Oklahoma, at WinStar Golf Course. "It's pretty exciting to be able to represent Jackson on a stage like this. Bargesser Steals the Show at D-3 State Track, Field Finals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Perhaps aptly named, Lexus Bargesser of Grass Lake High School was in pursuit of perfection on Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 track and field championships at Jenison High School. The freshman stole the show winning the 100 and 200-meter dash events on a stormy Saturday near Grand Rapids. The state meet was delayed at least three times for thunder and lightning in the area. Bargesser was a bolt of lightning in winning the 100 in 12.56 seconds – a personal best – and the 200 with a time of 25.43 – also her best time ever. She was one of a number of Jackson County athletes who earned medals and all-state honors finishing in the top eight in his/her events. Bargesser was seeded third heading into the 100 final, but got out of blocks quickly and held off fellow Cascades Conference runner Jayden Humphrey of Manchester at the end. “Jayden and I have gone back and…

The James R. Selby Memorial Track and Field Classic is today, the annual event serves as an all-star showcase for Jackson-area track athletes. Selby Memorial Track and Field Classic is today, the annual event serves as an all-star showcase for Jackson-area track athletes. Team gather at Withington Community Stadium outside Jackson High School each year at the end of May to see who the best sprinters, distance runners, throwers, jumpers and vaulters. The showcase run of the night will be the girls 800m.  Judy Rector from Hanover-Horton has committed to run at Michigan State and Allison Rand from Lumen Christi has committed to run at Tennessee. Rector Hopes to Repeat at MHSAA Track & Field Finals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Hanover-Horton High School distance runner Judy Rector said she gained her strength and endurance at an early age by working on the family farm. She must have gained her love of horsepower from competing in rodeos until tenth grade. It is paying off for the soon-to-be HHHS graduate. Rector won a pair of event Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 track and field competition at East Jackson High School. She was one of a number of athletes who will advance to the MHSAA state track and field finals on June 1 at various locations throughout the state. Rector won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 8 seconds, and backed that up by scorching the field in the 800-meter run winning by nearly seven seconds with a time of 2:12.
