By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Structure. That word keeps coming up during conversations with Michigan Center High School athlete Kole Sova. He liked going to the gym every day because it gave his day structure and kept his mind off of other things. Math is his favorite subject because Sova likes working with numbers. He misses the structure of going to school, practice, and everything that goes with attending high school. And finally, Sova plans to become an engineer – maybe building some structures in the future. There hasn’t been much structure in life for Sova or thousands of high school seniors recently. School was postponed for three weeks in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. In early April, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer closed schools for good for the remainder of the calendar year. A couple of days later the Michigan High School Athletic Association ended the spring season before it even began. “The Thursday everything was shut down was my first baseball practice of the season,” Sova said. “I figured they…

Hours of travel softball, fall leagues, and finding locations to pitch were going to pay off for Cooper. But that all ended the first week in April when school was canceled in Michigan for the remainder of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic. A couple of days later, the Michigan High School Athletic Association followed suit and canceled the remainder of the winter tournaments and the spring sports season. Cooper said she had hoped the season would start somewhat late, but never figured everything would be canceled. But the soon-to-be graduate has taken everything in stride. “I got plans for the future,” Cooper said on Tuesday. “It is disappointing that something crazy like this happened. “I have got to move on … I have bigger things in life.” Last year Cooper signed up to be in the United State Navy. She plans to head out in mid-July and plans to be…

Western defeated Haslett High School 45-34 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 girls’ basketball regional semifinal at Fowlerville High School. With the win the Panthers broke a school record for wins – 21 – with the old record dating back to 1988. MC Too Much for CC in Girls District Final

  • March 6, 2020

Michigan Center High School basketball players celebrate another district basketball title.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Michigan Center High School girls’ basketball player Shealyn Tripp said the Cardinals were not going to make the same mistake as last year. The Cardinals defeated Grass Lake in a tough district final in 2019, but lost in the opening round of the regional tournament at home. Tripp had a lot of do with the Cardinals’ 47-35 win over Columbia Central in this year’s Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 district final win. The junior scored 23 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Cardinals advanced to the regional round for another season. Michigan Center improves to 19-3 and rides a 16-game winning streak into the regional semifinals Tuesday at Columbia Central. Columbia Central finishes the season with a 20-3 record and another Lenawee County Athletic Association championship. The Golden Eagles breezed past East Jackson and Vandercook Lake to advance to this year’s district final. Michigan Center had to get past Grass Lake – again – to advance to the 2020 district final. “Last year we beat Grass Lake in the district final then lost to…
