VCL Softball Players Missing out on Repeat Attempt

But not like this – senioritis on steroids. When school was closed for the remainder of the year because of the COVID-19 pandemic a couple of weeks ago, and the Michigan High School Athletic Association followed suit Howard knew her sporting days at VCL were over. Howard and Anne Leach – both four-year starters for the Jayhawks’ varsity softball squad – were left to say “what if.” Longtime Coach Tim Hoffman said Howard, Leach, and third-year varsity player Olivia Applegate were scheduled to be tri-captains for the Jayhawks this season. “I was pretty upset to be honest (when the season ended before it started),” Howard said. “I wanted the (senior) year to be over, but not like this.” Vandercook Lake surprised a lot of teams by winning the Cascades Conference in softball a year ago. Sixteen Earn All-State Bowling Honors

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 17, 2020 9:58 PM) Members of the Michigan High School Interscholastic Bowling Coaches Association agree that some of the best high school bowlers in the state reside from the Jackson Area. The coaches voted 16 bowlers as first or second team members. Jackson area bowlers won two team titles and two individual title nearly 10 days ago at the Michigan High School Athletic Association bowling finals at various locations around the state. Northwest High School won the MHSAA Division 2 boys’ team title at Waterford. The Mounties were the No. 2 seeds following qualifying. Northwest defeated Cadillac by 20 pins in the finals. Grass Lake High School easily won the Division 4 boys’ team title in Lansing. The Warriors were the top qualifying team and won three matches for the school’s second boys’ bowling title. East Jackson High School advanced to the final four in Division 4 girls’ team bowling and Manchester made the final four in boys’ Division 4 team bowling. Logan Teubert of Jonesville High School won the MHSAA individual title in Division 3.…

Spring Arbor University to Host Robotics Competition

Hundreds of Michigan high school students pioneering the next generation of robotics will visit Spring Arbor University (SAU) on March 5-7 to compete in Jackson County’s second annual FIRST in Michigan District Robotics Competition. The Star Wars-themed competition is sponsored by Consumers Energy and is the first event of its kind for SAU. The FIRST robotics competition is a three-day event that is free to the public and located in the McDonald Athletic Center at SAU. “SAU is excited to partner with FIRST Robotics and Consumers Energy to bring high schoolers from across the state to this event. We see this as an excellent opportunity to help promote robotics and STEM programs,” says Ron Delap, Dean of the School of Engineering. “These students are building and competing with machinery that makes them stand out from their peers in our state and across the nation. Western Wins Wrestling District Thriller at NWHS

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports On a night of Michigan High School Athletic Association wrestling district action, points were hard to come by. Western High School scored just enough to upset Northwest in the Division 2 district final at NWHS on Thursday night. The Panthers tied the Mounties at 28, but won on criteria – most wins by a count of 8-6. Western joins five other area schools who will advance to regional semifinals in team wrestling on Wednesday of next week. Regional tournament winners advance to the MHSAA state team finals Feb. 28, 29 at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. Also winning district titles in Division 3 were Napoleon and Onsted High Schools. The Pirates will wrestle No. 1 ranked Dundee and Onsted will wrestling Monroe Jefferson at a yet-to-be-determined site in Division 3. Springport, Manchester, and Addison won Division 4 district titles. Addison will wrestle Union City in the regional semifinal in one Division 4 regional; and Springport will wrestle Byron and Manchester’s opponent has yet to…
