Seven area players were named to the Division 7 football team - as voted on by members of the MHSFCA. Here are the all-state players for area teams. Aiden Barrett (JTV Sports) By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 9, 2023 4:22 PM ET) Four Jackson County soccer players earned all-state honors as voted on by members of the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association. Three were from Western High School and one from Jackson Christian High School. WHS sophomore Roarke Watterson earned third-team honors for the Panther in Division 2. Also earning honorable-mention honors for WHS were goalie Aiden Barrett and forward Christian. Both are seniors and helped lead the Panthers to the Division 2 district final in October. The Panthers finished the season with a 13-6-1 record. Jackson Christian freshman Drew Barney earned third-team honors in Division 4. The JCHS midfielder set a school record for assists in a season scoring 28 for the Royals. Jackson Christian earned a share of the Independent Soccer League for its first league title since 2015.
High school football fans in Jackson County and surrounding areas will have to chances to see regional finals this week. Lumen Christi Catholic High School will host Clinton in the Division 7 regional final at LCCHS Friday at 7 p.m. Western High School will host Zeeland West at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Division 3 regional final. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 5, 2023 7:34 AM ET) For eight seasons a group of Western High School football players have been a band of brothers. At the core is a group of linebackers leading the Panthers to a regional final this week. Gibson French is one of the ring leaders in the group that has helped Western to a 10-1 record this season. Opponents are averaging less than nine points per game against the Panthers this season. French says it is a bond that has been molded since fifth grade. “It is a family we have been creating since fifth grade,” French said after the Panthers won its third district title in six seasons last Friday. “You can see it out there on the field … we have each other’s back. “Endless days of lifting in the weight room and practices has led to a brotherhood on the field.” French already has a brotherhood – and competition – with his older brothers Lue and Brandon. “There is a competition between the three of us to do better in sports,” French said.
