Coon wins DCP National Golf Championship

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports  (April 3, 2022 12:18 PM) The Jackson area has another golf champion. Horton resident Bentley Coon won the Drive, Chip, & Putt National Championship on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Course. The 11-year-old, who attends school at Bean Elementary School in the Western School District, finished the competition with 24.5 points to edge Hagen Williams by ½ a point. Players earn points based on length of drives – which Coon won with a drive of 225 yards – two chips and two putts. He needed to get his last putt within two feet, three inches to win on the 18th green at Augusta National.  “(Putting) is my weakest skill … I still don’t know how I got it that close,” Coon told the Golf Channel.  His grandpa, Rusty, was on the bag for the event. “My grandpa is my role model,” Coon said.  Coon finished first in the drives, second in the chips and scored 5.5 (out of 10) in the putting competition. He qualified for the national event by winning the regional DCP in October at Oakland Hills Country Club near Detroit.  Photos from the telecast courtesy DCP Championship, LLC.

Extreme Dodge Scoreboard: Grass Lake Gets Defensive in Regional Basketball Win Over CCHS

Grass Lake High School basketball player Gabi Lutchka attempts to drive past Tadassa Brown and Zoie Bamm (34) during a regional basketball game at Hudson High School on Tuesday. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 8, 2022 10:56 PM) Gabi Lutchka is near the top in some Michigan High School Athletic Association in several offensive categories.  She is known as a 3-point specialist and a scorer.  Tuesday night the Grass Lake High School senior showed she could play a little defense. Lutchka stopped Columbia Central’s top scorer in the second half en route to a 47-42 comeback win in the MHSAA Division 3 regional semifinal. The Warriors will advance to play Dansville on Thursday at Hudson High School in the regional final.  The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.  Lutchka switched from guarding Tadassa Brown from CCHS and defended Zoie Bamm in the second half. Bamm went wild in the second quarter against the Warriors scoring 13 points – mostly from the inside. “They (Brown and Bamm) are both ridiculously strong,” Lutchka said. “They get offensive boards and put them back up.” The adjustment helped Grass Lake erase a 31-28 lead by CCHS after the first half.  “We…

JTV Sports Quick Focus: Hitt Comes Up Clutch for Western Basketball

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 8, 2022 10:56 AM) A number of basketball coaches have tried to change the shooting style of Western High School senior Reece Hitt. They may have wanted her to shoot more from the front than from the side and shoot quicker. But the proof is in the pudding when it comes to success for Hitt. She knocked down a 3-point basket with seven second remaining in the Michigan High School Athletic Association D-1 district final against Holt on Friday to send the Panthers to the regional semifinals. She had been bottled up all night by a threesome of defenders out near the three-point line. “It was tough in the beginning because I wasn’t hitting them (3-point shots) and it was frustrating,” Hitt said. “In the second half if I was open, I shot it.” Hitt holds the WHS school record for 3-point baskets in a game with 10 against Pennfield. She also broke the school record for points in a game with 28. But the senior has a unique shot – off to the side like an elementary student trying to get the ball to the basket. “I have had quite a few coaches…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 7, 2022 7:50 AM) Three girls’ basketball teams will be looking for success at regional tournaments this week. But only two have the opportunity to win and move on in Michigan High School Athletic Association regional basketball play. Columbia Central (17-4) will face Grass Lake (16-5) in the Division 3 regional semifinal at Hudson Tuesday. Their game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at HHS and the CCHS/GLHS game at approximately 7 p.m.  The regional final is scheduled on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hudson.  The winner of the region will face the winner of the Ecorse regional in the quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 14, at Concord High School.  Western High School looks to advance in the Division 1 tournament at Mattawan. The Panthers will face a familiar foe in East Lansing – a team Western defeated 44-43 in early December.  Western (21-1) and East Lansing (17-4) will face off on Tuesday at Mattawan at approximately…
