Michigan Reconnect Skills Scholarships Open to First 1,000 Enrollees

(June 9, 2021 11:54 AM) A new wave of applicants can now apply for the Michigan Skills Scholarship program – which provides up to $1,500 to aid in tuition coverage at a private training school or program for adults 25 years and older seeking a skills certificate. The scholarship is part of the Michigan Reconnect program and offers certificates in five high-demand professional trade careers in industries: business management, construction, healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing. The scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis to the first 1,000 applicants who enroll with an eligible training provider. While the primary focus of the Michigan Reconnect program is to provide a tuition-free path to a certificate or degree through a local community college, the Skills Scholarship gives an alternative method to ensure more job seekers have additional opportunities to pursue their education and career goals. “We understand that sometimes the best place to find the skills training you want may not be at a community college – there may be a private training school or program that offers exactly what you’re looking for or is more convenient,” said Susan Corbin, Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity acting director. “Regardless of…

Henry Ford Health System Announces Commitment to Support Small Businesses Impacted by COVID-19

(June 9, 2021 11:46 AM) With the economic fallout of COVID-19 hitting small businesses and their communities especially hard, Henry Ford Health System and 11 other health systems have signed an “Impact Purchasing Commitment” and backed it with a joint $1 billion pledge to increase spending on local, minority, women-owned and other small businesses and enterprises. The goal is for health systems to use their power as anchor institutions in their communities to help build and support healthy, equitable, climate-resilient local economies – and improve overall community health and wealth. The commitment, designed by the Healthcare Anchor Network in partnership with Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth, is an agreement to shift procurement strategies and spending, including with Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) as well as local and employee-owned, cooperatively-owned and nonprofit-owned enterprises, by at least $1 billion over five years. The institutions also agree to work with at least two of their large existing vendors to create hiring pipelines in the disinvested communities that they serve. Additionally, the Healthcare Anchor Network pledge-signers commit to adopting sustainable procurement goals, which help build additional momentum garnered by hospitals that are part of the Practice Greenhealth network. It is…
