Jackson City Council Plans Outdoor Meeting at MLK Center
(October 12, 2020 10:27 AM) After seven months of virtual meetings, the Jackson City Council is planning it’s first full in-person meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March. Due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns and the ending of Executive Orders on virtual meetings, this meeting will be held outside in a pavilion at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center at 1107 Adrian Street on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The City urges residents who are attending the meeting to continue to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines. City officials will be wearings masks and seated six feet apart. Other safety precautions, such as cleaning microphones between citizen comments, will be enacted. A live stream of the meeting will be broadcast on the City’s Facebook page and website. Due to the remote location, this meeting will not be broadcast live on Comcast Cable Channel 21, but will be aired tape delayed.
MDOC Cumulative Report: 1,688 Confirmed Positive Cases at Jackson Facilities, 173 Confirmed Positive Jackson Staff
(October 11, 2020 9:49 PM) The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 5:20 PM October 9, there are 5,604 confirmed positive COVID-19 cumulative cases at facilities throughout the state. Of that statewide total, 1,688 of the confirmed positive cases are at Jackson facilities. Throughout the state corrections system, there are currently 84 active cases. In Jackson, there are 505 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases at Parnall Correctional Facility, 386 at Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, 3 at Cooper Street Correctional Facility, 20 at Duane Waters Health Center and 774 at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility. Among staff, there are a total of 552 COVID-19 positive cases statewide. In Jackson, there are 76 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases among employees at Parnall Correctional Facility, 4 at Cooper Street Correctional Facility, 45 at Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, 43 at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility, 1 at Jackson Training Center and 4 at Jackson Regional Warehouse. There have been a total of 74 deaths (statewide) of prisoners who had tested positive for COVID-19, 22 of those deaths were among prisoners at Jackson facilities. The State of Michigan is reporting 15* COVID-19-related deaths today, with the state total at 6,891. *The deaths announced today includes 28 deaths identified during a Vital Records review. Corrections made by local health departments to the provisional data resulted in a net daily count of 15 deaths. See cumulative data page for more information. As of 11:30 AM today, there are 1,283 positive cases (cumulative), and 51 deaths (cumulative)*. There are 23 new cases and 2 new deaths since yesterday’s report. MDHHS Issues Sweeping COVID Orders Largely Replacing Governor’s Prior Orders
(October 9, 2020 2:46 PM) Today, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Director Robert Gordon issued an Emergency Order under section 2253 of the Public Health Code restricting gathering sizes, requiring face coverings in public spaces and childcare facilities, placing capacity limitations on stores, bars and other public venues and providing for safer workplaces. “Our goal is to maintain policies that have made a drastic difference in the fight against COVID-19,” Gordon said. “Cases are rising, and the science is clear. Masks reduce the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing reduces the spread of COVID-19. Public action is critical to saving Michiganders’ lives.” Today’s order comes under a legal authority enacted by the Michigan Legislature after the Spanish Flu of 1918 specifically to deal with epidemics. That statute was not at issue in the Supreme Court’s ruling last week. The order completes the major elements of the department’s efforts to align orders under its own authority with actions taken by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer that were successful in combatting the spread of COVID-19.
