Jackson County Cumulative Report: 15,423 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 292 Deaths

(August 19, 2021 11:11 AM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 11 AM today, there are 15,423 positive cases (cumulative), and 292 deaths (cumulative)*.     There are 43 new cases since yesterday’s report. Cumulative recovered, as of August 18: 14,560** As of August 18, there are 14 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19.  The cumulative numbers posted on Mondays include the data from Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received.  *These numbers do not reflect any cases or deaths identified through Michigan Department of Corrections.  Their numbers are listed under a separate category and reported by the state at Michigan Statistics. Jackson YMCA Issues Request for Bids on New Facility Build

(August 19, 2021 11:10 AM) The Jackson YMCA today announced the issuing of requests for contractors to bid on various aspects of the new facility build. Final bid documents will be published Thursday, Aug. 26, with bids due Thursday, Sept. 23. In June, the YMCA announced that its architect/engineer Bergmann PC completed design work on a roughly 75,000-square-foot new facility. Granger Construction Co., the project’s construction manager, will be accepting electronic bids through its bid portal, BuildingConnected. Over the past year, Jackson YMCA staff, campaign volunteers and Granger executives have reached out to local contractors and sub-contractors, including the Jackson Commercial Contractors Association. “Granger has and will continue to reach out to engage local subcontractors from the greater Jackson community and solicit their participation in the new Jackson YMCA project,” said Granger Senior Project Manager Jeff Havranek. “Our goal is to utilize as many qualified trade partners from the surrounding area as practical.” The YMCA’s Building and Design Committee and Granger have compiled a list of nearly three dozen local vendors and subcontractors. Jackson Police Department Promotes Sergio Garcia to Deputy Chief

(August 19, 2021 9:38 AM) After rising through the ranks of the Jackson Police Department over the past 24 years, Sergio Garcia is ready  to be the department’s second in command. The City of Jackson today announced Garcia has been named Deputy Chief, a position that had been vacant since 2017. The Jackson native has spent his entire career in law enforcement with the department, working as a patrol officer, detective, sergeant, and lieutenant. Garcia also spent time working with JNET (Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team) and the Jackson County Special Response Team. The new Deputy Chief says he’s looking forward to this role. “While this is a tough time to work in law enforcement, there is lots of work we can do to build bridges, and gain public trust,” Garcia said. “I want to challenge officers every day to do the best they can to serve the community.” Elmer Hitt, the Director of Jackson Police and Fire Services, was the last person to hold the Deputy Chief position before he was promoted in 2017. “Sergio is well respected by his peers and subordinates alike,” said Director Hitt. “His work experience and natural leadership abilities make him an asset to the…

Michigan Reports 2,690* Coronavirus Cases, State Total Now 925,377

(August 18, 2021 4:45 PM) Michigan reported 2,690* coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 922,687. Michigan is reporting 46** COVID-19-related deaths today with the state total at 20,076.   *Note on cases (08/18/2021): Today's daily case count represents new referrals of confirmed cases to the MDSS since the last web update report.  Over the two days (Tuesday and Wednesday), the average number of new confirmed cases is 1345 per day. **The deaths announced today includes 15 deaths identified during a Vital Records review. See cumulative data page for more information. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 8/13/21): 875,719. Information is updated Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.
