Cougars fall at home

SPRING ARBOR, MI – For the first time in his very impressive career, Rob Hogans scored more than 30 points in back to back games. On February 1, Hogans poured in 42 points against Bethel College and tonight against Grace, Hogans led all scorers with 32 points.  Hogans heroic effort wasn't enough, however as the Cougars lost to the Lancers 68-64. Despite trailing the Lancers by as many as eight points in the first half, Spring Arbor held a narrow, one point lead after the first 20 minutes of play.  The score at intermission was Spring Abror32, Grace 31. Grace came out of the half with a little more momentum and took a 39-34 lead after three minutes of play.  Neither team scored a point for a little under four minutes of action and with 12:59 left on the clock the score was still 39-34 until Thomas Starks connected from outside the arc to break the drought. Over the next several minutes, the Cougars and Lancers traded blows and provided the fans that braved the cold and snowy roads a game worth the price of admission.  With less than three minutes to play, the score was 55-54 with Grace holding…

Chucky’s Game Pick: Lumen Christi at Western

LUMEN CHRISTI @ WESTERN – BOYS: There’s a lot of attention on the Titans with that lofty state ranking, but they seem to be taking it in stride. The entire squad was recently seen at Cascades hill having some fun on a forty foot long toboggan carved from a nearby spruce tree. The Panthers are enjoying their shiny new gym, although things get a little disruptive when the t-shirt cannon breaks and staff members instead fire warm, salted pretzels into the crowd. PICK: LUMEN CHRISTI

Chucky’s Game Pick: Hanover-Horton at Napoleon

HANOVER-HORTON (10-1) @ NAPOLEON (11-3) – BOYS: This is shaping up to be one of the biggest and most anticipated games of the year and… wait, isn’t that always the case when these teams meat? It’s the young Comets – featuring Brock Spink’s cool hair – and the veteran Pirates – countering with the beard of Kohl Roberts. The heat gets turned up when each side throws down gauntlets: If HH wins, Roberts agrees to shave his beard and if the Pirates win, Spink shaves his head. Truthfully, Chucky – being older and balding and mostly NOT hip – is jealous of both kids. On a side note, when Chucky walks out to his truck after the game he’s greeted by both teams and roughed up. PICK: NAPOLEON

Chucky’s Game Pick: Michigan Center at Grass Lake (girls)

MICHIGAN CENTER (13-3) @ GRASS LAKE (8-6) – Girls game: There is growing angst at MC when the Lady Cardinals learn that a true female cardinal – yes, the bird – is actually a brown and olive color and not red. These Lady Cards want new uniforms but settle for pizza and burgers at Missy’s Little Grass Shack after the game. The Warriors also head to Missy’s for dinner and a huge melee erupts between these rivals. Cooler heads prevail when someone flips all the television channels to the latest ‘Sharknado’ film. PICK: MICHIGAN CENTER

Hogans scores 42 in loss

SPRING ARBOR, MI – In the history of Spring Arbor University men's basketball, there have been 20 games when a player scored 40 or more points.  The latest was today when senior, Rob Hogans scored 32 of his game high 42 points in the second half against Bethel College.  Unfortunately for the Cougars, it was enough and Spring Arbor fell to the #20 ranked Bethel Pilots 80-69. The Cougars started the game in dominating fashion with a 12-2 lead after the first seven minutes and still lead after the first half 28-26 after a late first half rally by the Pilots. After the first 20 minutes of play, Thomas Starks led Spring Arbor with 11 points and Rob Hogans added 10 points in the first half. Bethel, ranked #20 in the NAIA polls was on a mission in the second half and started the half with a 17-5 run after six minutes and a 25-9 run through the first 10 minutes of the second half and trailing the Pilots 37-51 and a 14 point deficit. With 10:00 left, Rob Hogans tried with all his might to get the Cougars back into the game and what happened over that time was…
