File treating Wednesday’s meeting with Hanover-Horton as just another game, even if it’s not

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Napoleon — When he finds himself on the sideline Wednesday night analyzing the opponent, Jeremy File will have to feel something different than normal.   Even if he doesn’t want to admit it.   File, the first-year Napoleon boys basketball coach was an All-State recipient during his playing days at Hanover-Horton.   He guided the Comets to the quarterfinals in 2002 and the state semifinals in 2003, eventually ending his career as the leading scorer in program history with more than 1,500 to his name.   And again, File will have to feel something different than normal Wednesday, as the sideline general of the Pirates leads his guys against his former coach and former team for the first time ever.   “I’m looking forward to a great atmosphere, and I think that’s the great part,” File said of the 7 p.m. home date against Hanover. “They travel so well. They bring a good crowd. It’s going to be exciting.”   Asked about the obvious aspect of the game, about taking on his former program and going one on one against Chad Mortimer, his former coach, File did his best to downplay it.   “I…

Slow Start Dooms Jackson Despite Inspired Comeback and Wild Finish

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — A home-town eruption for the first time all night was in full force. Bleachers rocked and energy soared moments after Rarshiem Owens drilled a 3-pointer from the wing and a 16-point deficit had evaporated to just one. It was a scene of bedlam at Jackson High Friday night, showing just how good this Vikings team can be, and just how frustrating this eventual four-point loss to Grand Ledge really was. “There were just so many things that could have changed this game and moved it in our direction,” coach Dan Crowley said of the 52-48 setback. “If we make half the shots inside that we missed, we win this game. … I’m very proud of the way we fought back and didn’t give up. We got it down to one and almost had a steal with a chance to take the lead. So the fact we didn't give up was key, but it’s rough losing another one to them.” In the end, though, Jackson dug a grave in the first half that was too much to climb out of. Grand Ledge led 14-10 after the first quarter, but poured in 22 second-quarter…

Ban the ban

Ban the ban NCAA should reconsider satellite ban as summer months approach   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   I was never an elite prospect, never one to check the mailbox for endless Division 1 football offers or recruiting letters.   Sure, there were a few here and there, smaller D-3 schools, a couple in D-2 even I wondered if the mailman had the right address on.   But as my high school football career played out, the reality of playing in college came into focus.   So to did the desire to attend a camp here and there.   So, the summer before my senior year, myself and four buddies loaded into my green Topaz and headed to Bowling Green State University for a couple days away from home, immersing ourselves under the eyes of dozens of college coaches from near and far.   For me, nothing really came of that other than a few needed pointers in how to throw the football.   For others, I’m certain doors were opened.   I had mostly forgotten about that experience until last summer.   On a muggy, rainy summer day, I headed to Macomb Dakota to cover the Sound Mind…
